SUMMARY:Grounding & Connection: Creating a Sense of Safety for Foster & Adoptive Youth
DESCRIPTION:When kids feel safe\, they can show up as their better selves. We will consider physical\, emotional\, and social safety as we navigate what that might look like for children. We as parents and professionals can foster routines to help ground young people we care for and work with to help them feel connected with themselves\, others\, and their environment. Mya will offer ideas and approaches to help foster and adoptive kids embody a sense of security and safety. Mya is an inter-cultural adoptee and an Occupational Therapist who supports young clients and adoptive families in her Nature OT practice on California’s Central Coast. \nMya feels incredibly fortunate to be able to combine her love for nature with her almost 20-years clinical experience as a bilingual (Spanish) occupational therapist to create her own Nature OT practice that boosts kids’ physical and mental health. That means she skill-builds with toddlers to teens while exploring in nature in the Central Coast of CA. She supports neurodivergent kids (with ADHD\, Autism\, Sensory difficulties\, and anxiety) and kids that have experienced trauma and adoption. She believes in helping every child discover their own superpowers and feel more confident and grounded to live with greater joy and ease. Partnering with families to offer strategies and creative problem-solving solutions for their children is also essential to the deep impact she has with her young clients and families. When she’s not working\, she loves to move – working out at CrossFit classes or getting outdoors walking with her sweet shih-tzu pup\, her teen sons\, husband\, and friends along any body of water and among trees

DESCRIPTION:This in-person event will be held at Sherburne County Government Center  Maple Room 13880 Business Center Drive NW  Elk River\, MN 55330  \nIf capacity limit is reached\, please email edu@fosteradoptmn.org to join the waitlist. \nMaintaining primary relationships in foster care and adoption is crucial for the emotional well-being of children\, providing stability\, trust\, and a sense of belonging. Consistent connections help build resilience and support healthy development. Learn ways these relationships can be maintained from both research as well as personal experiences. \nSarah Hamlin earned her Masters in Clinical Social Work from the University of St. Thomas/St. Catherine’s University. She is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker. Sarah has been working with children and families for over 30 years and has been a play-based therapist since 2018.  She has extensive training in areas of trauma\, attachment\, child development\, and neurobiology with a certification in Permanency and Adoption. Sara is a vetted therapist with Foster Adopt Minnesota and is a certified trainer for the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE’s) curriculum. Sarah brings lived experience to the community as an adoptive parent as she works with children’s primary family members. Sarah is married and has 4 adult children\, one teenager and a  three-year-old grandson whom she adores! \nTia Dvorak is the founder of Regroup Counseling and Consulting PSC.  She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Supervisor\, Registered Play Therapist Supervisor\, and a Certified Synergetic Play Therapist. Tia has 10 years of experience working with children and families and specializes in helping families in the adoption and foster care systems. Tia enjoys working with parents and caregivers of children whose challenging pasts affect their daily lives. She works to provide the caregiver with tools and support to increase their attachment and positive relationships – while simultaneously decreasing negative behaviors.
