SUMMARY:Caregivers Parenting Circle
DESCRIPTION:Caregivers Parenting Group is a group that brings together individuals and families caring for children through kinship or foster care placement. Borrowing from the teachings of “Gifts Of the Sacred Circle” and “Gete-Aniahinabe Miikana” (The Old One’s Road). We will embrace the traditions of preserving family and cultural ties and supporting caregivers. The group started on February 5th but runs monthly on the first Monday of the month. The next group will be on April 1st\, 2024\, from 11:30 to 1:00. A meal will be provided. The group will be held in person at the Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center\, 2300 15th Ave S\, MPLS\, MN 55404. SUMMARY:[FosterEd] Making a Difference: Caring for the Infant with Prenatal Exposure to Drugs
DESCRIPTION:Over 300\,000 children in this country per year are delivered to women who have used alcohol\, tobacco\, marijuana\, or opiates and other illicit drugs during pregnancy.  This program will explore factors that impact the newborn from both a medical and a neurobehavioral perspective and provide strategies that parents and caregivers can use to address Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome and associated neurobehavioral difficulties. \nIra J. Chasnoff\, M.D.\, an award-winning author\, researcher and lecturer\, is president of NTI Upstream and a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. He is one of the nation’s leading researchers in the field of child development and the effects of environmental factors on the developmental trajectory of children and adolescents.  Dr. Chasnoff’s work encompasses community approaches to the integration of behavioral health services into primary health care\, the schools\, and the other multiple systems that serve children and families. Dr. Chasnoff has served several U.S. presidential administrations on committees and commissions dedicated to organizing and coordinating services for children and families across the nation and developing policies and procedures for addressing the needs of children at risk from prenatal and postnatal trauma.  He also has worked with a wide range of States across the nation and internationally in developing universal outreach and early intervention programs for children and families affected by trauma or substance abuse. \nDr. Chasnoff received his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio\, which in 1991 awarded him its first Distinguished Alumnus Award.  He is the author of numerous research articles regarding the long-term cognitive\, behavioral\, and learning outcomes of high-risk children\, and his article on racial and social class bias in the health care system has been cited as a landmark study by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.   Dr. Chasnoff has authored 15 books\, which have received numerous awards and one of which has been recognized by The Hague International Court. Dr. Chasnoff’s books explore the biological and environmental factors that impact the ultimate development of high-risk children and presents practical strategies for helping children reach their full potential at home and in the classroom. His newest book\, Guided Growth\, has received international acclaim for its in-depth discussion of educational and behavioral interventions for children and teens with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and early trauma.   Dr. Chasnoff has been a regular contributor to Psychology Today\, writing about high-risk children and their families.  The recipient of several awards for his work with women\, children\, and families\, Dr. Chasnoff for several years has been selected by a poll of physicians across the nation for listing in America’s Best Doctors\, cited for his ability to translate complex medical and psychosocial issues into relevant policy that guides the delivery of quality services.   Dr. Chasnoff has been active in establishing comprehensive family intervention programs for children in Australia\, Denmark\, Portugal\, Canada\, Vietnam\, the former Soviet Union\, and across the United States and has lectured on this topic around the world.

DESCRIPTION:The online track is best suited for individuals who want flexibility\, have limited business hour availability\, and/or those who prefer virtual learning. \nCouples may complete their education together or pursue it separately. Either way\, each participant must attend the entirety of their chosen track. \nIn this track\, you will complete your education over a four-week period. In addition to pre- and post-tests to assess your learning\, you will participate in a required\, pre-scheduled check-in with our education facilitators each week. \nThis class is available in Spanish upon request.

DESCRIPTION:Children’s Home and LSS welcome you to attend this free meeting to learn about fostering and adopting children from within the Minnesota foster care system. This orientation will provide an overview of the process and address details such as children served\, timelines\, fees (spoiler: there are practically none!)\, licensing requirements\, and more. \nAlong with completing this two-hour orientation\, you will also need to complete Foster Care & Adoption Education Class. Many families find it helpful to attend this orientation first because it is less time-intensive and will answer many of the general questions you may have about the process.
