SUMMARY:Preparing Birth and Adoptive Families for Healthy Adoption Relationships
DESCRIPTION:Building healthy relationships between bio/birth families and foster/adoptive families ideally begins long before an adoption occurs\, but various factors can make this difficult or impossible. This workshop explores how education can empower birth families and adoptive families to understand their distinct roles\, rights\, and responsibilities\, laying the groundwork for open and respectful connections after placement. We will explore the facets of open adoption contact and the “homework” that foster and adoptive parents still have to do when contact is not currently safe or accessible. We will discuss the role that technology plays in open adoption and how everyone deserves to set boundaries\, not just the power holders. Finally\, we’ll confront the realities of building trust across socioeconomic and power divides and identify practical ways to create bridges of empathy\, accountability\, and mutual respect that truly honor the child at the center of the adoption constellation.

SUMMARY:Understanding NEAR: Building Self-Healing Communities
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will help attendees understand NEAR\, which stands for Neurobiology\, Epigenetics\, ACEs\, and Resilience. It will cover how our early experiences impact our brain and behavior\, research findings from the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study\, and the numerous opportunities we have as individuals and collectively to foster resilience and healing. This presentation provides a shared understanding of Adverse childhood Experience (ACEs) and catalyzes community actions that promote resilience. By employing this strategy\, we adopt a public health approach to shifting the the trajectory of health and well-being in our state. \nAddressing intergenerational and historical trauma requires a range of creative solutions and approaches. Although a two-hour presentation cannot provide all the answers\, the key goal of this presentation is to establish a common language and understanding of ACEs and the relative research as a starting point. After attending this presentation\, attendees are encouraged to think about how this information could be applied within their “sphere of influence” (family\, workplace\, school\, community\, etc.). \n\nLinsey McMurrin\, a citizen of the Leech Lake Nation of Ojibwe\, strives to serve our communities in a culturally affirming way to promote truth-seeking\, healing\, and change. Linsey’s work focuses on understanding how we are impacted by our experiences and the experiences of those who have come before us\, allowing us to build more authentic relationships and connections through healing-centered engagement. Linsey advocates for equity-centered and community-driven work\, believing that cultural humility\, social-emotional skill development\, and a commitment to lifelong learning\, unlearning\, and growth are central components in supporting thriving individuals\, families\, and communities. Linsey is the Executive Director of Peacemaker Resources. \n\n\nBarb Sorum has been working in the field of child abuse and neglect prevention since 1993. As Director of Prevention Initiatives with Minnesota FamilyWise Services\, she works extensively with family and community supportive services to strengthen awareness and prevention education efforts. Barb coordinates and facilitates regional trainings\, coalition building\, implementing system changes\, supervision\, and quality assurance. She works with community leaders and agencies to establish and guide the operations of parenting support and education programs through the Circle of Parents statewide network. \nAs a Certified ACE Interface Master Trainer\, Barb specializes in the impact of trauma on the neurobiology and brain development of children\, epigenetics\, the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study\, and community resilience and capacity building (NEAR). She has extensive knowledge of child abuse\, neglect\, and domestic violence prevention efforts\, providing direct and indirect services\, support\, and intervention to women\, parents\, children\, and families in crisis. She is a survivor of child abuse and domestic violence and is committed to children’s health\, welfare\, and safety\, as well as developing parent and community-based leadership. Barb represents FamilyWise Services in local\, statewide\, and national collaborative activities\, including service on the statewide and national Circle of Parents board of directors.

SUMMARY:Family Triple A: Achieving Appreciative Atmospheres
DESCRIPTION:Embracing a multifaceted\, appreciative approach is vital when developing belonging and empowerment in foster care and adoption. Accordingly\, this webinar will provide both what the appreciative family looks like and how we can maximize a partnership between family\, children\, and community. Via a combination of personal and professional experiences in foster care and adoption\, Dr. Ronald Ferguson will provide the lessons learned and promising practices towards achieving an appreciative atmosphere in foster care and adoption. \n\nRon Ferguson\, Ph.D. Hailing from St. Croix\, Virgin Islands\, my life has been an adventurous\, cross-cultural journey. I have now made Minnesota my home. I seek to leverage both my lived experience and training as a sociologist to create positive systemic change. I hope that I continually “pay it forward” and be an agent of healing and hope!

SUMMARY:"Personal Belongings" Project: Returning Records to Adoptees & Birth Families
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: To receive a certificate of attendance for the live webinar\, attendees must register individually\, attend the entire training\, and watch from their own device to ensure proper tracking \nThe Minnesota Department of Children\, Youth & Families (DCYF) is working to return approximately 9\,500 personal items to adoptees and birth families\, some dating back to 1885. This session explores the complexities of such efforts\, drawing from a similar 2019 initiative in Seattle\, where over 3\,000 adoption files were audited and items returned. Attendees will gain insight into structuring large-scale record restoration projects\, navigating ethical dilemmas\, and overcoming challenges to ensure adoptees have access to their personal histories. \n  \n\nAngela Tucker is a Black transracial adoptee and the author of “You Should Be Grateful:” Stories of Race\, Identity\, and Transracial Adoption\, published in April 2023 by Beacon Press. Her search for her biological family was featured in the documentary CLOSURE\, which premiered on Netflix in 2015. In 2022\, Angela founded the non-profit Adoptee Mentoring Society\, offering virtual mentorship for adoptees worldwide. With 15 years of experience in child welfare\, she has appeared on CNN\, Red Table Talk\, The New Yorker\, and more\, advocating for adoptees. Angela lives in Seattle\, WA.
