SUMMARY:"Personal Belongings" Project: Returning Records to Adoptees & Birth Families
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: To receive a certificate of attendance for the live webinar\, attendees must register individually\, attend the entire training\, and watch from their own device to ensure proper tracking \nThe Minnesota Department of Children\, Youth & Families (DCYF) is working to return approximately 9\,500 personal items to adoptees and birth families\, some dating back to 1885. This session explores the complexities of such efforts\, drawing from a similar 2019 initiative in Seattle\, where over 3\,000 adoption files were audited and items returned. Attendees will gain insight into structuring large-scale record restoration projects\, navigating ethical dilemmas\, and overcoming challenges to ensure adoptees have access to their personal histories. \n  \n\nAngela Tucker is a Black transracial adoptee and the author of “You Should Be Grateful:” Stories of Race\, Identity\, and Transracial Adoption\, published in April 2023 by Beacon Press. Her search for her biological family was featured in the documentary CLOSURE\, which premiered on Netflix in 2015. In 2022\, Angela founded the non-profit Adoptee Mentoring Society\, offering virtual mentorship for adoptees worldwide. With 15 years of experience in child welfare\, she has appeared on CNN\, Red Table Talk\, The New Yorker\, and more\, advocating for adoptees. Angela lives in Seattle\, WA.

SUMMARY:Part 2: A Brain-First Approach to Parenting
DESCRIPTION:Many children who have experienced prenatal or postnatal stressors such as trauma\, alcohol\, and drug exposure also have challenging behavioral symptoms\, requiring support from their parents and caregivers that is often more intensive than “typical” parenting. Parents and caregivers are then required to shift their parenting from a traditional behavioral lens to one that is focused on their child’s unique neurobiology. This workshop will teach participants how parents and caregivers can set themselves up for success as it relates to the care of their child\, so as to avoid burnout and compassion fatigue\, so they can thrive in their parent experience\, feeling more resilient over time. \nEileen Devine is a licensed clinical social worker and founder of Brain First Parenting. She lives in Portland\, Oregon with her husband and two teenage children\, one of whom lives with FASD. She has over 20 years of clinical experience and for the last ten of those years\, has focused solely on supporting parents who have kids with neurobehavioral conditions. In addition to her clinical work with parents\, she facilitates dozens of workshops and trainings each year for parents\, teachers\, and mental health professionals and is a trainer for the Center for Adoption Support and Education’s (C.A.S.E.) accredited Training for Adoption Competency (TAC) Program\, where she instructs other clinicians across the state of Oregon on what it means to be an adoption and foster competent therapist.

SUMMARY:Part 1: A Brain-First Approach to Parenting
DESCRIPTION:Neuroscience research underscores the influence of environmental factors\, teratogens\, and prenatal or postnatal stressors such as trauma\, alcohol\, and drug exposure on brain development. Many children impacted by these factors also face behavioral struggles. Why do traditional parenting techniques often fall short for such children and what alternative strategies can parents use to effectively support their children? Part one of this workshop will teach participants how to apply a brain-first approach to parenting children who have FASD and other neurobehavioral conditions. Through this lens\, behaviors are redefined and solutions are aligned with research findings\, offering new insights into supporting affected children more successfully.
