SUMMARY:The Five Most Common Challenging Behaviors and What to do About Them
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: To receive a certificate of attendance for the live webinar\, attendees must register individually\, attend the entire training\, and watch from their own device to ensure proper tracking \nThis presentation explores the most challenging behaviors children who have experienced trauma may exhibit and provides practical\, trauma-informed strategies for responding with empathy and effectiveness. Child welfare professionals will gain insight into the underlying causes of behaviors such as shame\, need for control\, and sensory differences\, as well as techniques to foster trust and mitigate behavioral challenges. By understanding these behaviors through a more holistic lens\, professionals can better support children and their families in building healthy\, lasting connections. \n  \n\nDr. Jana Hunsley is a psychologist dedicated to supporting foster and adoptive families through consulting\, training\, coaching\, and counseling. Her work is centered on understanding and addressing the unique needs of every family member\, ensuring a holistic approach to healing and stability. Jana has created a proven model that improves the well-being and quality of life for foster and adoptive families. She earned her doctorate in experimental psychology from the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development at Texas Christian University\, where she focused on developing post-adoption support services. Jana has worked in a variety of clinical settings\, including residential treatment\, institutional care\, schools\, child welfare\, and juvenile detention\, providing therapy for children and youth who have experienced trauma. Her passion for this work is deeply personal—shaped by her own experience as a teenager when her family adopted her siblings.

SUMMARY:Reflective Foster Parenting 101: Understanding the Mind of the Child with Challenging Behaviors
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: To receive a certificate of attendance for the live webinar\, attendees must register individually\, attend the entire training\, and watch from their own device to ensure proper tracking \n\nReflective Foster Parenting (RFP) provides an overarching approach to understanding and helping traumatized children. RFP underscores the importance of the mental states (thoughts\, feelings\, and intentions) of foster children and how they relate to the children’s behavior. A reflective foster parent helps the child to identify\, organize and use words to express their confused thoughts\, feelings and needs. The four aims of RFP are to improve: attachment relationships\, emotional control\, ability to deal with frustration\, and awareness of others’ perspectives. \n\nDr. Richard J. Delaney is an internationally known speaker and trainer. He has a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Loyola University of Chicago. Dr. Delaney spent four decades focused on the treatment of children in the child welfare system. Currently\, he is the co-developer and principal investigator of FosterParentCollege.com.

SUMMARY:Building Stronger Bonds: Enhancing Parent-Child Attunement
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is designed to help caregivers foster a deeper emotional connection with their children through attunement. Attunement—the ability to understand\, respond to\, and connect with a child’s emotional needs—is fundamental to building a strong\, secure relationship. Caregivers will learn practical strategies to enhance emotional attunement\, improve communication\, and deepen responsiveness to their child’s needs. The workshop will also include mindfulness exercises to promote present-moment awareness and provide tools to navigate common challenges in parent-child relationships. \n\nDr. Amy Groessl\, a licensed clinical social worker\, brings extensive expertise in treating children and adults with complex trauma histories\, neurocognitive challenges\, attachment disorders\, and adoption-related issues. She is based in Chicago and provides psychotherapy\, clinical supervision\, and consultation through her private practice. \nDr. Groessl has been with NTI Upstream’s Training Faculty since 2016. She previously served as the Director of the Therapy Program at Children’s Research Triangle (CRT) for 11 years\, where she provided direct services\, conducted local and national training sessions\, and managed grants at the regional and federal levels. Her work included a seven-year project with the National Child Traumatic Stress Network\, further solidifying her contributions to the field. \nDr. Groessl is also a Core Faculty member at the Institute for Clinical Social Work\, where she teaches courses on qualitative research\, trauma\, attachment theory\, and neuropsychology. As an adoptee and genetic genealogist\, she integrates her personal and professional insights to support individuals navigating identity\, emotional\, and relational complexities associated with domestic and international adoption and unexpected DNA discoveries. Her unique blend of lived experience and professional expertise positions her as a trusted leader in the field of trauma and adoption-related work.
