SUMMARY:Workshop: Be-You-tiful: Empowering Teens with Tools for Skin\, Hair & Self-Care
DESCRIPTION:Workshop: Be-You-tiful \nEmpowering Teens with Tools for Skin\, Hair & Self-Care \nPresented by: Faatemah Ampey \nFormat: Hands-on Workshop \nDuration: 3 hours \nTarget Audience: Pre-teens & teens ages 12–17 (all genders) \nCapacity: 15-20 participants ( must have guardian accompanying) \nSupplies Provided: gift bags\, combs\, brushes \n\n\n\nWorkshop Overview:\nAdolescence is a critical time for self-image\, identity\, and confidence. Be-You-tiful is an inclusive\, affirming workshop designed to empower teens—especially those with textured hair—with foundational skills in skincare\, hygiene\, and hair care. \nLed by award-winning beauty expert and educator Faatemah\, this session offers more than just beauty tips—it provides life tools. With a warm\, relatable approach\, this class combines education\, hands-on practice\, and real talk to help young people feel good in their skin and proud of their natural features. \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives:\nBy the end of the workshop\, participants will: \n\nUnderstand basic skincare and hygiene practices for teen bodies\nLearn how to build a consistent skincare routine (cleansing\, moisturizing\, breakouts\, etc.)\nExplore hair care techniques for curls\, coils\, braids\, fades\, and protective styles\nPractice detangling\, moisturizing\, and simple styles\nDevelop a deeper sense of confidence\, agency\, and pride in their natural appearance\nReceive a take-home guide to support continued care at home\n\n\n\n\nWhy This Workshop Matters:\nTeenagers—especially Black and brown youth—often lack access to culturally relevant\, expert-led guidance around their skin and hair. Misinformation\, media pressure\, and harmful beauty standards can lead to confusion\, low self-esteem\, and neglect of self-care. \nBe-You-tiful fills that gap with affirming\, age-appropriate instruction rooted in self-respect and cultural pride. This class equips teens with the knowledge and tools to care for themselves with intention and joy. \n\n\n\nWorkshop Flow:\n1. Welcome & Self-Affirmation (15 min) \n\nIcebreaker + setting the tone\n“What makes you feel most like you?”\n\n2. Skincare & Hygiene Talk (45 min) \n\nSkin basics (types\, breakouts\, products\, myths)\nDaily/weekly skincare routines\nClean habits: face towels\, pillowcases\, deodorant\, period hygiene\, etc.\nHands-on routine practice with kits provided\n\n3. Hair Care for Curls\, Coils & Fades (60–75 min) \n\nScalp health\, moisture\, detangling\nProtective styles\, curl care\, product breakdown\nPractice session: twist-outs\, styling\, curl refreshing (mannequins or peer models)\n\n4. Confidence Circle + Q&A (30 min) \n\nOpen space for questions and honest dialogue\nJournaling prompt: “One thing I love about myself is…”\nTips for keeping a self-care rhythm at home\n\n\n\n\nWhat Teens Will Receive\n\nHair care samples for textured hair\nPrinted “Be-You-tiful” Self-Care Guide\nConfidence and community\nOptional access to a digital follow-up toolkit\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Facilitator:\nFaatemah is a nationally recognized hairstylist\, beauty expert\, and former TV personality with a gift for helping people of all ages see their beauty more clearly. With decades of experience in textured hair and youth mentorship\, Faatemah combines fun\, honesty\, and expert knowledge to create workshops that are as empowering as they are educational.

SUMMARY:Foster & Foster Adopted Youth Retreat
DESCRIPTION:An Opportunity for Foster & Foster Adopted Youth to Make New Connections & Build Friendships \nLutheran Social Service (LSS) is excited to offer a special opportunity for foster and foster adopted youth (ages 13-17) to spend a weekend among peers who have shared life experiences at Camp Knutson (Camp K) in Crosslake\, Minnesota. In addition to helping foster and foster adopted youth build new connections and make new friends\, this retreat will offer an opportunity for siblings who are not currently residing in the same placement to spend quality time together and maintain their familial bond. Registration priority will be given to siblings who do not reside in the same household. Whether attending with a sibling or not\, every youth will gain valuable life skills that can be used long after the retreat has concluded.
