SUMMARY:Sharing Your Values with the Youth in Your Care
DESCRIPTION:Sharing Your Values with the Youth in Your CareTues Dec 9 and Wed Dec 10 (two parts)12 noon- 1 pm\nResearch shows that if young people understand family values around healthy development\, decision making\, and relationships\, they are more likely to follow them; however\, many families do not discuss their values\, often because they have not had the chance to reflect on them. This workshop offers participants the opportunity to do just that\, as well as identifying the factors that have shaped their personal values and how those values have changed over time. The goal of this workshop is to help families feel more prepared to have values conversations with the young people in their lives. \nTrainer Bios:\nSonja Fernández was born and raised in Caguas\, Puerto Rico. Their main passions are social justice\, human rights\, restorative/transformative practices and writing/storytelling. In addition to working for liberation at all their intersections\, they love music\, coffee\, and spending time with their family and their dog Benito. They earned a BA in Political Sciences from the University of Puerto Rico and a Juris Doctor from the UPR School of Law. Since 2017\, they have worked as a legal researcher and writer\, a site facilitator for the Hennepin County\, a as an educator and a Restorative Facilitator and Trainer. \nLy Baumgardt started with the SELF team at the start of 2025 and has been an educator since 2015. Before LSS\, Ly co-founded the local nonprofit TIGERRS and works as their coordinator alongside his role at LSS. It has worked with interACT and THIS around policy\, education\, medical trainings\, and peer healthcare\, and has been a youth worker and youth educator for the past seven years. Ly loves roller skating\, cats\, podcasts about antizionist Jewish vampires\, making quizzes\, the concept of ghosts (but not really)\, and questionably bad music.

SUMMARY:Share and Support Group
DESCRIPTION:Support Groups are an excellent tool where families are able to share experiences and encourage each other in a confidential\, non-judgmental setting.  Support Groups are facilitated by North Homes case managers\, with years of experience in both adoption and foster care fields.  It is an opportune time for families to network\, problem solve and gather information on available resources and trainings.

SUMMARY:Healing for Survivors of the Troubled Teen Industry: How to Not Make Things Worse
DESCRIPTION:Recent documentaries\, books\, and podcasts share some horrific accounts from survivors of the Troubled Teen Industry (TTI). Noting their implicit coercion and historic abuses\, some have called for these types of youth residential programs to be abolished\, citing the significant trauma carried by survivors. \nThis workshop provides a trauma-informed path forward in supporting and engaging survivors of the TTI. Attendees will learn about the historical concerns within the TTI\, and be provided practical\, innovative\, and gentle ideas for how adults can provide empowering\, healing spaces for youth and families in the wake of a TTI placement. \nAdam Arnold is a licensed psychotherapist\, trainer\, and consultant in the Twin Cities. From his experiences working in a wide variety of youth work settings\, Adam put together The Democratic Youth Engagement (DYE) Model\, a collaborative approach for adults living and working with young people; it’s the lens through which he employs his clinical work. \nAdam has special interest in working with persons who have been wounded by systems of control\, including survivors (ages 5 and up) of religious\, spiritual\, medical\, and therapeutic abuse. Central to his clinical work is gaining consent for psychotherapy from all of his clients – ensuring that they are driving their goals for treatment – regardless of their age. \nIn his personal time\, Adam spends time watching scary movies\, singing musical theater\, and strengthening his broken spine.
