SUMMARY:Using Reflective Foster Parenting to Understand Non-compliance and Defiance
DESCRIPTION:Caregivers and professionals consistently report that defiance and non-compliance are two of the most difficult challenges youth in care display. These challenges\, along with disobedience and disrespectful behavior\, are often exasperating for caregivers. Traumatized children often fail to understand and abide by rules at home\, school and in the community. The mind of the child with these issues may view rules\, demands\, and requests from authority figures as unfair and unpredictable and respond with resistance. We will explain the possible origins of these behaviors\, and intervention considerations. Specific attention will be placed on the connection of defiance and non-compliance with anxiety\, trauma and neglect.

DESCRIPTION:Ron Stallworth was the first Black detective in the history of the Colorado Springs Police Department. He overcame many obstacles\, including prejudice from members of his own force and the difficulty of impersonating a KKK member. Stallworth offers insights on the intersections of race and law enforcement: how they have changed in some ways and stayed the same in others. Stallworth draws on both his own experiences and historical and current events.

SUMMARY:[Part 1] Secondary Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Secondary trauma\, also known as vicarious trauma\, is the emotional and psychological impact experienced by people who are indirectly exposed to the traumatic experiences of others. It can occur through hearing details about or witnessing the aftermath of a trauma\, and it can lead to symptoms similar to those of post-traumatic stress disorder. Secondary trauma is common among helping professionals and those close to trauma survivors. This workshop will educate participants to better understand the symptoms of secondary trauma\, the risk factors\, and ways to cope with challenges that may arise from being exposed to secondary trauma.  We encourage those interested in the workshop to attend both days\, as Day 1 will lay the foundation for Day 2\, which will build on that knowledge with new\, advanced material.

SUMMARY:Social Work Ethics in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Navigating Opportunities and Risks
DESCRIPTION:As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into health\, human services\, and social work practice (from predictive analytics and risk assessment tools to client engagement platforms) social workers must be equipped to navigate its ethical implications. This professional development session explores the intersection of social work values and AI technologies.
