SUMMARY:[Spring Summit] Understanding Challenging Behavior Through a Brain First Lens
DESCRIPTION:Neuroscience research underscores the influence of environmental factors\, teratogens\, and prenatal or postnatal stressors such as trauma\, alcohol\, and drug exposure on brain development. Many children impacted by these factors also face behavioral struggles. Why do traditional parenting techniques often fall short for such children and what alternative strategies can parents use to effectively support their children? This workshop will teach participants how to apply a brain-first approach to parenting children who have challenging behaviors. Through this lens\, behaviors are redefined and solutions are aligned with research findings\, offering new insights into supporting affected children more successfully. \n  \n\nEileen Devine is a licensed clinical social worker and founder of Brain First Parenting. She has over twenty years of clinical experience and for the last dozen of those years\, has focused on supporting parents across the globe who have children with brain-based differences and challenging behavioral symptoms. Through her work\, she teaches parents and professionals how to support individuals with challenging behaviors by moving away from consequence and reward systems\, to an approached rooted in neuroscience\, and focused on the brain – behavior connection. In addition to her clinical expertise\, Eileen is the parent of a teenage daughter who lives with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder\, a serious brain-based condition.

SUMMARY:[Spring Summit] Disable the Child's Label
DESCRIPTION:Labels take on a life of their own as the words we speak and write have great power to build up\, define or defeat a child. These labels have the ability to follow children for the rest of their lives and can shape their attitude\, self-esteem\, relationships and professional life. Derek Clark will give you insight into his personal childhood journey of being wrongfully labeled in the foster care system for thirteen years\, and the key reasons on how he did not turn out addicted\, incarcerated\, or dead. Derek will challenge many of the accepted practices of the child welfare system and provide alternative ways to understand why kids behave in the ways that they do. This understanding will generate hope and restore dignity to the young people as well as restore humanness and compassion in the hearts of professionals. \n\nDerek Clark’s life is one of resilience and redemption. As a child\, he suffered unthinkable child abuse\, abandonment and emotional distress before being turned over to the psychiatric hospital at age five. His 13 years in the San Francisco bay area foster care system reflected an early life of humiliation\, aggression\, emotional distress\, overwhelming anxiety and being wrongfully labeled. Eventually\, with the help of foster parents\, a fantastic social worker and mentors\, he defied the artificial limitations imposed upon him. Derek knows first-hand how to cope with adversity and overcoming hardship. His past has never held him back from accomplishing what he set his heart and mind to. \nDerek is an inspiring motivational speaker/trainer. His popular keynotes are “The Power of Resilience and Redemption: From Brutal Trauma to Triumph” and “You Cannot Think Negative About a Child and Expect a Positive Outcome”. He is the author of seven books including Disable the Label: Never Limit the Potential of a Child\, Never Limit Your Life and the I Will Never Give Up book series. Derek’s true-life trials and personal triumphs have inspired organizations worldwide with his message of resilience\, hope\, courage\, unwavering perseverance and redemption. He recently received the International Foster Care Award through SOS Children’s Village where they are located in 134 countries helping and protecting children.\nDerek has also been a featured expert on CNN Headline News\, The Steve Harvey TV Show\, The Ricki Lake TV Show and other TV shows around the world. Recently\, Derek has become a viral video sensation for his “Rapping Dad” videos which have had over 250 million social media views.

SUMMARY:Child & Teen Checkups (C&TC)
DESCRIPTION:C&TC is a benefit for children in Minnesota who are eligible for Medical Assistance (Medicaid). C&TC provides for a regular schedule of well-child checks 0-20 years of age that help children and youth stay healthy. These well-child checks look at your child’s growth\, development and overall health. These “checkups” are meant to keep your child healthy by finding any health concerns or problems early. Finding health concerns early prevents them from becoming bigger problems later. Keeping your child healthy means they are more likely to grow into healthy adults.  Learn about this helpful benefit and how they can help you find a clinic\, locate transportation or an interpreter\, and assist with setting up appointments.  We will have time for questions and answers. \nPresenter:\nSandra Camp Senior Community Health Worker\nHennepin County Child and Teen Checkups Program

SUMMARY:[Spring Summit] Racialized: The Cultural Impact on Native American Transracial Adoption
DESCRIPTION:Rarely discussed are the problematic issues that arise in the child who is adopted from one ethnicity/culture and placed into another\, especially if that placement revolves around race. My experience as an anthropologist and Native American transracial adoptee allows me to speak directly about the negative pressure we encounter as we attempt to navigate the two cultures we inhabit. We will explore the tensions through the lens of cultural anthropology\, including issues if belonging/non-belonging\, what we have gained/lost by living in a racialized world\, as well as how Americans are taught to ‘see’ Native Americans and how those negative images impact us. What the audience will learn is that the racialized environment the child lives in can have long-lasting negative impacts\, far into their adulthood\, and ways they can work in their communities to combat the racism\, while standing up for their child. \n  \n\nSusan Devan Harness is a cultural anthropologist\, member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes\, and an American Indian Transracial Adoptee. \nHer book Bitterroot: A Salish Memoir of Transracial Adoption has received multiple awards including the High Plains Book Award for Indigenous Author and Creative Nonfiction categories\, as well as the Sudler Award for the best work of nonfiction or fiction on western American subject by a woman author.  Ms. Harnesses cultural anthropology research\, Mixing Cultural Identities Through Transracial Adoption\, was published by Edwin Mellen Press. \nHer most recent writing appears in the anthology\, When We Become Ours\, published by HarperCollins\, and Philosophies of Adoption: Perspectives and Reflections\, which will be published by Lexington Press in 2024. \nMs. Harness has spoken both nationally and internationally on the topic of American Indian transracial adoption\, as well as appeared in various media including podcasts\, public radio\, and on the TEDxMileHigh stage.  She holds MAs in Anthropology and English\, both from Colorado State University\, where she is an affiliate of the Department of Anthropology and Geography. \nMs. Harness lives in Fort Collins\, Colorado with her husband\, Rick\, her Golden retriever\, Max\, and a beautiful vegetable garden.
