SUMMARY:Enhancing Your Skills as a Foster Parent: Session Three
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: Effective June 1\, 2024\, live webinar attendees who need a certificate of attendance must register individually and watch on their own device for proper tracking. \nA foster parent must be many things to many people. Child welfare professionals depend on the skills of foster parents. Children need safety and guidance to heal from the various traumas that they have experienced in their short lives. In the last of this 3-part session\, we will end with: self-care\, collaboration with multiple people in the child’s life\, and cultural and identity development. \nIf you missed sessions 1 and 2\, they can be found in our webinar library after they have been completed:  fosteradoptmn.org/education/webinar-library\nIn session 1\, we learned about listening with empathy\, perseverance in the midst of the struggle\, flexibility and adaptability.\nIn Session 2\, we explored the following skills: patience and humor\, stability and consistency in relationships\, discipline. \nLorie is a mother of four adult children\, three by birth and one through adoption. She has worked with children\, youth\, and families for over 28 years\, helping them increase their capacity for healthy relationships. Her current passion is working with families involved in child protection and foster care. As a foster and adoptive parent she is intimately aware of the joy and heartache experienced within the foster system. \nAngie Ellsworth\, MS\, LSW\, LSC\, is the owner of Timeout Behavior Coaching\, LLC\, where she trains and coaches parents and teachers in research-based positive behavior strategies to create a more calm and respectful environment and build healthier relationships. As a wife\, parent of three\, and more than 20 prior years experience as a school social worker\, counselor\, and behavior coach\, Angie knows all about the challenges happening in the trenches.  It is a pleasure and an honor for her to now be providing in-home parent coaching to support families in more meaningful and transformational ways.  Having witnessed amazing growth in others\, Angie is looking forward to sharing her expertise with you. \nClosed Captioning will be available once the webinar begins.

SUMMARY:[IN-PERSON] Silent Battle
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: This is an in-person training located at the Law Enforcement Center – 611 W Main St. Marshall\, MN 56258 \nThis training program provides foster and adoptive parents with essential insights into trauma-informed care\, focusing on understanding how trauma affects the mind and body of children. Participants will explore the impact of adverse childhood experiences on emotional\, cognitive\, and physical development\, gaining tools to recognize and respond to trauma-related behaviors. Through interactive discussions and practical strategies\, parents will learn how to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters healing and resilience. By understanding the neurobiological effects of trauma\, parents can better advocate for their children’s needs\, enhance their caregiving approaches\, and promote positive attachments. This training empowers caregivers to nurture and support their children’s journey toward recovery and stability. \n  \n\nBre Gronli\, MSW\, LGSW graduated from University of Minnesota Morris with her bachelors degree in Liberal Arts for the Human Services. She then earned her Masters from Simmons University School of Social Work along with a certificate in trauma informed care. Currently Bre works with all ages and is working toward her certification in Play Therapy. She uses her knowledge in Experiential Play and Filial Play when working with children and families. Bre is currently in the Somatic Experiencing Professional Training Program as an SE student as created by Dr. Peter Levine. Healing isn’t one size fits all. Bre believes when working with clients it is important to do so through a trauma-informed lens which involves prioritizing safety and trust in therapeutic relationships with both adults and children. By creating a supportive environment\, Bre helps clients feel secure enough to explore their traumatic experiences at their own pace. This collaborative approach fosters open communication and empowers individuals to express their feelings and challenges. Bre believes it is important for clients to know they are not alone and will come alongside them\, offering guidance and understanding as they navigate their healing journey\, ultimately promoting resilience and personal growth.  Being adopted herself\, Bre also has a unique understanding of adoption-related challenges and has developed expertise in adoption competence. She works closely with adoptive families\, adopted individuals\, and foster families to address the complexities and unique needs that arise within the adoption process. Bre provides a supportive and nurturing space for exploration\, healing\, and building healthy attachments. Along with providing individual therapy for both adults and children\, Bre is also very passionate about educating others on trauma and has provided several trauma informed trainings for professionals and foster/adoptive groups. Bre shares her knowledge and expertise locally and throughout the state of MN and has developed a comprehensive workshop focused on foster care/adoption and taking a deep dive into what foster children are going through. Through engaging and interactive presentations\, Bre equips participants with practical skills and tools to enhance their ability to understand and work with trauma.

SUMMARY:Practicing the History (& Future) of the Adoptee Voice
DESCRIPTION:For some adoptees\, breaking the seal of a dominant adoption narrative is a survival issue. They may function in silence\, afraid of being perceived as ungrateful. Cam will demonstrate skills from Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare to explore how silence has often separated adoptees from their own lived experiences. As a Permanency and Adoption Competency alum and consultant\, Cam invites caregivers and professionals to sit with him in this reflective and interactive training based on illustrations of adoptee coalition-building practices\, past and present\, and a collaborative walk-through of research-informed interventions to help the adoptee voice reach parents\, clinicians\, and allies alike as we venture to speak truth toward a collective healing journey. \nCam Lee Small\, author\, clinician in private practice\, and dynamic advocate for mental health and Adoption Literacy\, brings lived experience and professional expertise to the forefront of his mission. His work has been featured by TEDx Minneapolis\, CBS Minnesota\, National Council for Adoption\, Christianity Today\, University of Minnesota School of Social Work\, and Center for Adoption Support and Education. Cam’s community-based vision for adoptee-informed advocacy is evident through his 1:1 counseling services\, live workshops and support groups\, Masterclass trainings\, and his unique blend of content creation/collaboration across digital and grassroots platforms. His book The Adoptee’s Journey: From Loss and Trauma to Healing and Empowerment addresses the intersection of adoption\, mental health\, and social responsibility. Cam’s personal insight stands honestly next to his professional acumen\, making him a transformative force within the adoptee community and throughout the fields of advocacy and mental health.
