DESCRIPTION:Much is happening in the world of Autism as Autistic adults are leading the field and bringing hopeful changes. This workshop is for those just beginning to learn about Autism OR are just starting to challenge the harmful ways Western culture has stigmatized the Autistic brain/functioning. The purpose of this gathering is to bring about a cultural reframing of Autism from “disease” to “one of many neurotypes.” \nDana Butler\, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist\, Supervisor (Apagender)\, is the mother of three wonderful kiddos ages 7-13 all of whom are Autistic and ADHD\, and partner of almost 20 years is also Autistic and ADHD. Dana describes their home as one of silliness\, joy and difference. Dana is a therapist who specializes in working with children and their families AND with historically excluded populations. SUMMARY:Understanding the Impact of Birth Order
DESCRIPTION:Foster and adoptive parents often wonder about birth order in relation to fostering or adopting when they already have children by birth. This presentation will examine the significance of birth order\, and encourage participants to consider how it relates to birth/existing kids in foster and adoptive families. \nDaniela Coats is a Licensed Master Social Worker in the state of Texas (Currently under the supervision of Suisan Walker\, LCSW-S). Daniela is passionate about serving the entire foster family\, including birth children. Daniela is a self-identified “birth kid.” Her parents fostered when she was a child\, and eventually adopted her youngest sibling. Having grown up in a home that fostered and adopted\, Daniela was a temporary sibling to many children. Now\, Daniela and her husband have six children – four through adoption and two by birth. While Daniela has a variety of experience in social work contexts\, she has spent most of her career working in foster care and adoption. Daniela is currently a therapist at Be Still Counseling and Consulting in Texas. She has developed trainings and resources for parents and professionals\, and has contributed to professional writings on the subject. \nClosed Captioning will be available once the webinar begins.

Each person we meet has an internal fight going on.  Those who have experienced trauma\, including the kids on your caseload\, are fighting every day to just be. Learn how you can aid in the healing journey. \nBreanna Gronli\, MSW\, LGSW works with Sojourn Counseling Group. As a trauma certified private practice clinician\, Breanna believes in the power of healing. Breanna’s unique perspective comes from her experience of being adopted at the age of 10 from the foster care system after a difficult childhood. Breanna draws from her own traumatic childhood experiences to help others heal. She has all ten aces but never let this stop her from healing. She is currently working towards certification in Registered Play Therapy with extensive training in Trust Based Relational Interventions\, a trauma modality created by Karen Purvis and colleagues. Breanna is also working toward a certification in Somatic Experiencing a modality working with the nervous system and the impact of trauma created by Dr. Peter Levine. Before attending graduate school\, Breanna worked for 7 years in the social work field in various capacities. She was a rule 25 assessor for chemically addicted individuals\, child protection specialist\, forensic investigator (Corner House trained)\, foster care/adoption licensor\, and Guardian ad litem for both children’s and family court. As a clinician\, she works alongside foster families\, adopted families\, and parents with children experiencing symptoms of trauma\, believing it only takes one caring adult in a child’s life to make a difference. \n

DESCRIPTION:Caregivers Parenting Group is a group that brings together individuals and families caring for children through kinship or foster care placement. Borrowing from the teachings of “Gifts Of the Sacred Circle” and “Gete-Aniahinabe Miikana” (The Old One’s Road). We will embrace the traditions of preserving family and cultural ties and supporting caregivers. The group started on February 5th but runs monthly on the first Monday of the month. The next group will be on April 1st\, 2024\, from 11:30 to 1:00. A meal will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Adult Adoptees from all placing agencies are welcome to attend. While each story is unique\, we recognize that there are many core similarities that adoption weaves into life experiences. Topics will be suggested\, but each month the conversation will be open to relevant\, participant-led\, discussion. DESCRIPTION:This training will focus on a cognitive behavioral lens. Participants will learn about what causes challenging behaviors and effective techniques in reducing acting out behaviors. \nScott Nyegaard holds a Master of Science in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of Walden and a Bachelor of Science in Applied Psychology from Bemidji State University.  He is the CEO and Founder of Legacy Group\, LLC an agency specializing in evidence-based trainings. Twenty-five years in the Helping Fields has been part of his journey\, working largely with adolescent populations.  Much of his energy is expressed by promoting a Strength Based approach in people and agencies. Scott was the Treatment Director for a juvenile facility in Upper Minnesota from 1998-2015\, where he had oversight in all programming\, staff recruitment and training\, client treatment implementation and budget spending.  Scott has trained in most areas of the U.S. and led several International trainings in Ireland\, Canada\, and Uganda.  He has trained thousands of participants who are committed to learning Evidence Based Programs and skills. In 2010\, Scott founded Legacy Group\, LLC a consulting agency\, and developed this venture over the next five years until it grew into a full-time commitment.  A primary purpose of this agency is to invest in people and help them fulfill their legacy.  Too often individuals chase to concept of ‘some day’.  This can often lead to missing out on the present\, where we should be investing our time and energy.  ‘Live the Legacy you want to leave’ is part of his Mission Statement. \nClosed Captioning will be available once the webinar begins.

DESCRIPTION:A foster parent must be many things to many people. Child welfare professionals depend on the skills of foster parents. Children need safety and guidance to heal from the various traumas that they have experienced in their short lives. \nThis three part training session will explore the following skills: Session 1: listening with empathy\, perseverance in the midst of the struggle\, flexibility and adaptability\, Session 2: patience and humor\, stability and consistency in relationships\, discipline\, Session 3: self care\, collaboration with multiple people in the child’s life\, and cultural and identity development. Registration for each session will be separate. \nLorie Leske\, Parent Coach and Family Advocate is a mother of four adult children\, three by birth and one through adoption. She has worked with children\, youth\, and families for over 28 years\, helping them increase their capacity for healthy relationships. Her current passion is working with families involved in child protection and foster care. As a foster and adoptive parent she is intimately aware of the joy and heartache experienced within the foster system. \nAngie Ellsworth\, MS\, LSW\, LSC\, is the owner of Timeout Behavior Coaching\, LLC\, where she trains and coaches parents and teachers in research-based positive behavior strategies to create a more calm and respectful environment and build healthier relationships. As a wife\, parent of three\, and more than 20 prior years experience as a school social worker\, counselor\, and behavior coach\, Angie knows all about the challenges happening in the trenches.  It is a pleasure and an honor for her to now be providing in-home parent coaching to support families in more meaningful and transformational ways.  Having witnessed amazing growth in others\, Angie is looking forward to sharing her expertise with you.

Navigating these conversations with youth whose backgrounds specifically include abuse\, neglect\, domestic violence\, substance abuse\, incarceration\, rape\, prostitution\, and human trafficking will be discussed. \nDr. Chaitra Wirta-Leiker is a licensed psychologist\, international/transracial adoptee of color\, and an adoptive parent. She specializes in providing mental health support focused on adoption\, trauma\, and racial identity work through her private practice based in Denver\, Colorado. She is a frequent speaker and trainer at adoption agencies\, camps\, and conferences throughout the U.S.\, and the creator of the National Adoptee-Therapist Directory. DESCRIPTION:This is a new training that Ampersand Families is offering to our families. It will focus on how to support and affirm a youth who identifies as lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, queer\, questioning\, or another identity in the LGBTQ+ community in an adoptive\, pre-adoptive\, or relative/kinship home. This training will also include strategies to implement in your home to create a welcoming and inclusive space regardless of the youth’s sexuality.
