SUMMARY:Part 1: A Brain-First Approach to Parenting
DESCRIPTION:Neuroscience research underscores the influence of environmental factors\, teratogens\, and prenatal or postnatal stressors such as trauma\, alcohol\, and drug exposure on brain development. Many children impacted by these factors also face behavioral struggles. Why do traditional parenting techniques often fall short for such children and what alternative strategies can parents use to effectively support their children? Part one of this workshop will teach participants how to apply a brain-first approach to parenting children who have FASD and other neurobehavioral conditions. Through this lens\, behaviors are redefined and solutions are aligned with research findings\, offering new insights into supporting affected children more successfully. \nEileen Devine is a licensed clinical social worker and founder of Brain First Parenting. She lives in Portland\, Oregon with her husband and two teenage children\, one of whom lives with FASD. She has over 20 years of clinical experience and for the last ten of those years\, has focused solely on supporting parents who have kids with neurobehavioral conditions. In addition to her clinical work with parents\, she facilitates dozens of workshops and trainings each year for parents\, teachers\, and mental health professionals and is a trainer for the Center for Adoption Support and Education’s (C.A.S.E.) accredited Training for Adoption Competency (TAC) Program\, where she instructs other clinicians across the state of Oregon on what it means to be an adoption and foster competent therapist.

Do they have a desire to look at the impact of where they have come from\, but also cultivate a sense of who they are and who they want to be? Lifebooks and life story work can help children who have experienced foster care and those who have been adopted. Lifebooks can help individuals integrate information about their past\, present\, and future in a useful and therapeutic way. As a professional working with and supporting youth\, you have a unique position to support and empower this journey by helping children gather and process information\, answer questions\, and support them in telling their story using their own words. In this workshop\, we will take a closer look at Lifebooks\, what they are (and are not)\, how and when they can be used\, and helpful tips to get started. \nElliott Odendahl (she/her) is a clinical social worker\, therapist\, and adoptee who specializes in supporting individuals & families affected by foster care & adoption\, trauma\, and perinatal mental health issues.  \nClosed Captioning will be available once the webinar begins.

SUMMARY:[FosterEd] Realistic Self-Care Strategies for Caregivers
DESCRIPTION:As we approach transition to school time it is natural to have quite a bit of stress.  In fact\, changing from summer schedules and to the stressors of school can feel like your whole world is getting turned upside down (again).  During this time\, it is important to focus on how to have strategies in place so that your own self-care can happen (or continue or begin).  This workshop will be discussing how secondary traumatic stress impacts caregivers\, how to know if/when it’s happening to you\, and how to create real life strategies for implementation of self-care.  Without self-care (in all its various forms) it is not possible to keep your own mental health and wellness intact while caring for others who are struggling. \nAmber Morrighan\, LMFT\, MA\, PACC is the owner of Healing Connections Therapy and Consulting LLC in St. Cloud\, MN.  She is an experienced Mental Health Therapist\, Clinical\, and Program Supervisor with a demonstrated history of working in the individual and family services industry. \nClosed Captioning will be available once the webinar begins.
