SUMMARY:[Spring Summit] Meeting Belonging Needs as a Supportive Adult
DESCRIPTION:“We all are born into the world looking for someone looking for us\, and we remain in this mode of searching for the rest of our lives.” – Dr. Curt Thompson \nBelonging is a basic human need that is essential for every person\, regardless of age or background. However\, children who have experienced traumatic or adverse events may find it harder to attain this need than others. As adults who have stepped up to care for and help them grow\, it is important to ensure that their trauma does not define their future. Did you know that the primary sources of belonging for youth are family\, school\, and community\, in that order? If you serve\, connect\, or care for youth in any 3 of those spaces\, then this webinar will be for you. We will cover foundational concepts such as trauma\, belonging\, ACEs\, and more. We will explore the link between trauma and a lack of belonging. And most importantly\, we will uncover\, brainstorm\, and discuss strategies for fostering a sense of belonging in your particular role and assisting those you serve in reaching their full potential. \nGaelin Elmore is a dynamic and nationally sought-after keynote speaker\, trainer\, and thought leader. He works with organizations and people who want to help children overcome trauma and unleash their potential through the implementation of belonging. Gaelin’s passion and energy for his work stems from his heart for justice\, and his own lived experience. Gaelin has spent most of his life\, and his entire childhood\, on a journey to find the places in which he belonged. That journey led Gaelin to the National Football League\, and now to stages and board rooms all across the country\, aiming to inspire\, encourage\, and equip others to think differently about their work and its long-term impact on others. Gaelin now lives in Eden Prairie\, MN\, where he gets to experience the purest form of belonging as a husband to his wife\, Micaela\, and dad to their two daughters\, Laniah and Tatum.

SUMMARY:[Spring Summit] [Part 1] The Intersection of Transracial Adoption & Racial (in)Justice
DESCRIPTION:This 3-part workshop is designed for adoption agencies (staff and families)\, child-welfare organizations and conferences. \nTransracial caregiving is a multifaceted journey for the entire family\, but it is often the child who bears the brunt of navigating the complexity of the experience. It is critical that caregivers and parents understand the history of why children of color are over-represented in child-welfare in order to avoid perpetuating racism and to instead embrace an anti-racist outlook to support the health and wellbeing of transracial adoptees and/or transracial foster youth.  This workshop will provide a window into the nuanced first-hand narratives of adoptees through videos\, anonymized case studies and Angela’s personal stories. This interactive workshop will leave you thinking about the role transracial adoption plays in our quest for racial justice in America. \nPART 1:\n-History of race in child-welfare within the United States (Laws & Definitions)\n-American Racial Norms & Implicit Biases\n-Transracial adoptee identity \nJoin us for Part 2 on April 8th and part 3 on April 17th. \nAngela Tucker\, a Black transracial adoptee\, is an author and internationally recognized speaker on adoption\, race\, identity and inclusion. Her debut book; “You Should Be Grateful:” Stories of Race\, Identity and Transracial Adoption\, was published in April 2023 by Beacon Press. At the age of 26 Angela found her biological family. Her determination and insatiable curiosity is an inspiration to many and is on display through her search for her biological parents in the intimate documentary\, CLOSURE (Hulu\, Netflix\, Amazon Prime). Angela has worked within child welfare for the past 15 years\, including securing and managing a $250\,000 grant for a Seattle based foster care agency\, while working as the director of Post-Adoption Services.  As a film producer\, author and cultural commentator\, Angela has appeared on CNN\, Al Jazeera\, The Red Table Talk\, in The New Yorker and many other top-tier media outlets to help center adoptee stories. She is a mentor and advisor to adoptees nationwide\, has contributed to renowned fictional work\, including Broadway’s Jagged Little Pill and NBC’s hit show\, This Is Us. \nAs the CEO of The Adopted Life\, Tucker hosts The Adoptee Next Door podcast to offer nuanced\, ethical and accessible content in order to create a world where all adoptee experiences are valid and valued. She is also the host of the INNOVATE! podcast\, where she interviews those named Re-Envisioning Foster Care Champions of America. She has produced five short educational films about adoption and offers regular consulting for media\, agencies and families. Angela founded the Adoptee Mentoring Society in 2022\, Angela lives with Bryan Tucker\, her Emmy-award winning spouse in Seattle\, Washington.

As an adoptee herself and an Occupational Therapy clinician\, she supports young clients and adoptive families everyday tap into their sensory system needs. She will share tips and strategies she uses in her Nature OT practice to help regulate the senses! \nMya feels incredibly fortunate to be able to combine her love for nature with her almost 20-years clinical experience as a bilingual (Spanish) occupational therapist to create her own Nature OT practice that boosts kids’ physical and mental health. That means she skill-builds with toddlers to teens while exploring in nature in the Central Coast of CA. She supports neurodivergent kids (with ADHD\, Autistism\, Sensory difficulties\, and anxiety) and kids that have experienced trauma and adoption. She believes in helping every child discover their own superpowers and feel more confident and grounded to live with greater joy and ease. Partnering with families to offer strategies and creative problem-solving solutions for their children is also essential to the deep impact she has with her young clients and families. When she’s not working\, she loves to move – working out at CrossFit classes or getting immersed in nature walking with her sweet shih-tzu pup\, her teen sons\, husband\, and friends along any body of water and among trees.

SUMMARY:[Spring Summit] Treating Childhood Anxiety: The Important Role Parents Play
DESCRIPTION:Research has shown that parental involvement in childhood anxiety treatments is often a necessary condition for positive treatment response.  In fact\, some research shows that younger children with anxiety (i.e.\, ages 3-8) who participate in an individual psychotherapy model that does not include parents fare no better than those in the waitlist/control group.  In recent years\, treatment protocols that focus solely on working with the parents of anxious youth have been developed and empirically tested.  Embedded in these parent-only treatment protocols are a wealth evidence-informed recommendations for how parents can help their child overcome anxiety.  This presentation will therefore focus on how parents can help their child feel more confident in their ability to manage anxiety.  Specifically\, this presentation will discuss ways parents can respond to verbalized worries\, decrease avoidance patterns in their child\, tolerate associated physiological symptoms of anxiety\, and more.  This presentation is geared to both parents and professionals who are hoping to learn how better to guide parents of anxious youth. \nDr. Sam Marzouk is a clinical child and adolescent psychologist and\nowner of Promethean Psychology\, a private psychology practice in the Edina/St. Louis Park area.  Dr. Marzouk specializes in working with adolescent males\, although he sees children and adolescents of all ages for a variety of clinical concerns.  In addition to his routine clinical work\, Dr. Marzouk regularly provides workshops and trainings on pediatric mental health to psychologists\, schools\, parents\, pediatricians and other pediatric medical providers.  He is also a contributing author to the Minnesota Pediatrician\, a quarterly educational newsletter of the Minnesota Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.  He also runs a biweekly blog titled “kids these days” where he provides commentary on various topics relevant to childhood including social media\, depression\, ADHD\, and more.

SUMMARY:[Spring Summit] My Story\, My Way: The Therapeutic Lifebook
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to put the pieces of your life together? Not just to look where you have come from but to help yourself move forward? What about helping a child you care about put those pieces together? Lifebooks can help children who have been in foster care and those who have experienced adoption. Lifebooks can help them integrate information about their past\, present\, and future in a useful and therapeutic way. \nLifebooks are a tool to gather and process by talking about the child’s information\, answering their questions\, and supporting the child in telling their story using their own words. In this workshop\, we will take a closer look at Lifebooks\, what they are (and are not)\, how and when they can be used\, and helpful tips to get started. \nElliott Odendahl (she/her) is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW)/therapist and adoptee\, who specializes in supporting individuals and families who have been affected by foster care\, adoption and trauma. Elliott holds a Master’s degree from Augsburg College and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Minnesota\, Twin Cities. Elliott has had the privilege of working with children\, youth\, individuals and families of diverse backgrounds who are experiencing behavioral and mental health needs\, disruptions in attachment and family relationships\, trauma\, as well as those experiencing the negative impacts of systemic and structural bias and racism. In addition\, Elliott has previously worked with children and youth with neurodiversity-related diagnoses\, provided Therapeutic Supervised Parenting to families\, crisis support services to foster care providers and support services to families involved with Child Protection. \nElliott has a special passion for providing support and services to adoptees\, birth parents\, adoptive parents\, resource parents and anyone from the adoption/foster kinship network. As an adoptee herself\, Elliott believes it is an honor to be able to give back to the community\, finding joy in being able to support the unique needs of transracial foster and adoptive families.

SUMMARY:[Spring Summit] Blocked Care: Recognizing and Meeting the Caregiver's Needs
DESCRIPTION:Chronic stress\, feelings of helplessness\, and isolation affect caregivers’ ability to give quality care to their children. When you add the pressure of being the healthy attachment figure for a child who has experienced early-life trauma\, the emotional demands can be overwhelming. Caregivers can easily slide into their own survival behavior and struggle to give compassionate\, nurturing\, consistent care\, a phenomenon called blocked care. In this training\, we will discuss blocked care: how it develops\, how to best help caregivers overcome it\, and how to promote healing for the whole family system. \nDr. Jana Hunsley is the Executive Director of Project 1025 LLC\, an organization devoted to equipping and supporting adoptive and foster families\, where she offers consulting\, training\, coaching\, and counseling for families and professionals. She is also co-founder of Camp Together\, a nonprofit offering therapeutic family camps for families impacted by trauma. Jana received her doctorate in experimental psychology from the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development at Texas Christian University where her research focused on understanding and meeting the needs of every member of adoptive and foster families through post-adoption supportive services. Over the years\, Jana has worked in various clinical settings as a therapist with children and youth who have experienced trauma\, including residential treatment\, institutional care\, schools\, child welfare\, and juvenile detention. Jana credits her passion for this work to her siblings who were adopted when she was a teenager.

SUMMARY:[Spring Summit] Relationships Heal
DESCRIPTION:Relationships Heal: Evidence Based Mental Health Services for Young Children and Caregivers. \nThis workshop will help audience members understand key principles of infant and early childhood mental health. We will also explore the importance of early intervention services that simultaneously support the developmental needs of young children\, their primary caregivers\, and their relationship(s) with one another. Two evidence-based early childhood mental health interventions (i.e.\, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-up and Child Parent Psychotherapy) will be introduced with specific attention to and consideration of children with a history of relational trauma and disruptions in care. \nDr. Nora Erickson is a clinical child psychologist and Assistant Professor in the Birth to Three Program within the University of Minnesota Department of Pediatrics. She received her PhD in clinical psychology from Washington State University and completed both her predoctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan. Her clinical and research work focuses on the intersection between parental well-being and early childhood mental health\, with a specific emphasis on intergenerational trauma and resiliency. Dr. Erickson has prior training in several evidence-based early childhood mental health interventions\, including dyadic and group-based modalities.

SUMMARY:[Spring Summit] Developing Children's Self-Regulation in the Context of Relationships
DESCRIPTION:Developing children’s self-regulation in the context of relationships: Theory\, research\, and practical strategies. \nThe ability to regulate thoughts\, feelings\, and behaviors is the cornerstone for healthy development. Trauma exposure can have a cascading effect on regulatory pathways. Research shows that caregivers can buffer these effects. This session will introduce research on the development of self-regulation and provide strategies for promoting social-emotional development within the context of relationships\, such as caregivers\, peers\, teachers\, case workers. \nDr. Katie Stone is a clinical child psychologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics\, Division of Clinical Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Minnesota Medical School. She received her Ph.D. in clinical child psychology from the University of Kansas. Her predoctoral internship was completed at the Medical University of South Carolina and her postdoctoral fellowship was at the University of Minnesota Medical School. In line with a systems-based framework\, her research and clinical work focus on the influence of interpersonal trauma and caregiver disruptions on neurodevelopment and self-regulation during early childhood.
