SUMMARY:Prioritizing Belonging in the Classroom for Students Navigating Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Gaelin is back to honor National Teacher Day\, May 7th\, 2024!  As adults who have stepped up to care for and help youth grow\, it is important to ensure that their trauma does not define their future. Did you know that the primary sources of belonging for youth are family\, school\, and community\, in that order? If you serve\, connect\, or care for youth in any 3 of those spaces\, then this webinar will be for you. Belonging is a basic human need that is essential for every person\, regardless of age or background. However\, children who have experienced traumatic or adverse events may find it harder to attain this need than others. We will cover foundational concepts such as trauma\, belonging\, ACEs\, and more. We will explore the link between trauma and a lack of belonging. And most importantly\, we will uncover\, brainstorm\, and discuss strategies for fostering a sense of belonging in your classroom spaces and assisting those you serve in reaching their full potential. \nGaelin Elmore is a keynote speaker\, trainer\, lived experience expert\, and child belonging advocate. He blends his lived experience with current psychology and neuroscience to help adults\, professionals\, and communities implement belonging so that trauma doesn’t have the final say in the lives of those impacted by it. \nClosed Captioning is available once the webinar begins

SUMMARY:Grounding & Connection: Creating a Sense of Safety for Foster & Adoptive Youth
DESCRIPTION:When kids feel safe\, they can show up as their better selves. We will consider physical\, emotional\, and social safety as we navigate what that might look like for children. We as parents and professionals can foster routines to help ground young people we care for and work with to help them feel connected with themselves\, others\, and their environment. Mya will offer ideas and approaches to help foster and adoptive kids embody a sense of security and safety. Mya is an inter-cultural adoptee and an Occupational Therapist who supports young clients and adoptive families in her Nature OT practice on California’s Central Coast. \nMya feels incredibly fortunate to be able to combine her love for nature with her almost 20-years clinical experience as a bilingual (Spanish) occupational therapist to create her own Nature OT practice that boosts kids’ physical and mental health. That means she skill-builds with toddlers to teens while exploring in nature in the Central Coast of CA. She supports neurodivergent kids (with ADHD\, Autism\, Sensory difficulties\, and anxiety) and kids that have experienced trauma and adoption. She believes in helping every child discover their own superpowers and feel more confident and grounded to live with greater joy and ease. Partnering with families to offer strategies and creative problem-solving solutions for their children is also essential to the deep impact she has with her young clients and families. When she’s not working\, she loves to move – working out at CrossFit classes or getting outdoors walking with her sweet shih-tzu pup\, her teen sons\, husband\, and friends along any body of water and among trees

Children who are adopted change the families who claim them in permanent ways. Blended families often have foster children\, adopted children and birth children. These children all have different experiences of what being part of a family means. Loyalty\, loss\, anger\, trauma and fear create an extremely difficult living situation for everyone in the family home. SUMMARY:Supporting Your Biological Child
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a workshop with Daniela Coats. Many foster and adoptive parents have questions surrounding the impact that foster care and adoption will have on their biological children. This presentation will examine the experiences of biological children\, how to prepare them for the journey ahead\, and ways to support them along the way. \nDaniela Coats is a Licensed Master Social Worker in the state of Texas (Currently under the supervision of Suisan Walker\, LCSW-S). Daniela is passionate about serving the entire foster family\, including birth children. \nDaniela is a self-identified “birth kid.” Her parents fostered when she was a child\, and eventually adopted her youngest sibling. Having grown up in a home that fostered and adopted\, Daniela was a temporary sibling to many children. Now\, Daniela and her husband have six children – four through adoption and two by birth. \nWhile Daniela has a variety of experience in social work contexts\, she has spent most of her career working in foster care and adoption.
