SUMMARY:[Spring Summit] Blocked Care: Recognizing and Meeting the Caregiver's Needs
DESCRIPTION:Chronic stress\, feelings of helplessness\, and isolation affect caregivers’ ability to give quality care to their children. When you add the pressure of being the healthy attachment figure for a child who has experienced early-life trauma\, the emotional demands can be overwhelming. Caregivers can easily slide into their own survival behavior and struggle to give compassionate\, nurturing\, consistent care\, a phenomenon called blocked care. In this training\, we will discuss blocked care: how it develops\, how to best help caregivers overcome it\, and how to promote healing for the whole family system. \nDr. Jana Hunsley is the Executive Director of Project 1025 LLC\, an organization devoted to equipping and supporting adoptive and foster families\, where she offers consulting\, training\, coaching\, and counseling for families and professionals. She is also co-founder of Camp Together\, a nonprofit offering therapeutic family camps for families impacted by trauma. Jana received her doctorate in experimental psychology from the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development at Texas Christian University where her research focused on understanding and meeting the needs of every member of adoptive and foster families through post-adoption supportive services. Over the years\, Jana has worked in various clinical settings as a therapist with children and youth who have experienced trauma\, including residential treatment\, institutional care\, schools\, child welfare\, and juvenile detention. Jana credits her passion for this work to her siblings who were adopted when she was a teenager.

SUMMARY:[Spring Summit] Relationships Heal
DESCRIPTION:Relationships Heal: Evidence Based Mental Health Services for Young Children and Caregivers. \nThis workshop will help audience members understand key principles of infant and early childhood mental health. We will also explore the importance of early intervention services that simultaneously support the developmental needs of young children\, their primary caregivers\, and their relationship(s) with one another. Two evidence-based early childhood mental health interventions (i.e.\, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-up and Child Parent Psychotherapy) will be introduced with specific attention to and consideration of children with a history of relational trauma and disruptions in care. \nDr. Nora Erickson is a clinical child psychologist and Assistant Professor in the Birth to Three Program within the University of Minnesota Department of Pediatrics. She received her PhD in clinical psychology from Washington State University and completed both her predoctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan. Her clinical and research work focuses on the intersection between parental well-being and early childhood mental health\, with a specific emphasis on intergenerational trauma and resiliency. Dr. Erickson has prior training in several evidence-based early childhood mental health interventions\, including dyadic and group-based modalities.

SUMMARY:[Spring Summit] Developing Children's Self-Regulation in the Context of Relationships
DESCRIPTION:Developing children’s self-regulation in the context of relationships: Theory\, research\, and practical strategies. \nThe ability to regulate thoughts\, feelings\, and behaviors is the cornerstone for healthy development. Trauma exposure can have a cascading effect on regulatory pathways. Research shows that caregivers can buffer these effects. This session will introduce research on the development of self-regulation and provide strategies for promoting social-emotional development within the context of relationships\, such as caregivers\, peers\, teachers\, case workers. \nDr. Katie Stone is a clinical child psychologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics\, Division of Clinical Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Minnesota Medical School. She received her Ph.D. in clinical child psychology from the University of Kansas. Her predoctoral internship was completed at the Medical University of South Carolina and her postdoctoral fellowship was at the University of Minnesota Medical School. In line with a systems-based framework\, her research and clinical work focus on the influence of interpersonal trauma and caregiver disruptions on neurodevelopment and self-regulation during early childhood.

Breanna’s unique perspective comes from her experience of being adopted at the age of 10 from the foster care system after a difficult childhood. Breanna draws from her own traumatic childhood experiences to help others heal. She has all ten aces but never let this stop her from healing. She is currently working towards certification in play therapy and somatic experiencing. She has extensive training in Trust Based Relational Interventions\, a trauma modality created by Karen Purvis and colleagues. Before attending graduate school\, Breanna worked for 7 years in the social work field in various capacities. She was a rule 25 assessor for chemically addicted individuals\, child protection specialist\, forensic investigator (Corner House trained)\, foster care/adoption licensor\, and Guardian ad litem for both children’s and family court. As a clinician\, she works alongside foster families\, adopted families\, and parents with children experiencing symptoms of trauma\, believing it only takes one caring adult in a child’s life to make a difference.

SUMMARY:A Safe Place: An Experiment in Discussing Our Differences
DESCRIPTION:In this interactive talk\, Merritt replicates the Safe Place experiment from his book\, I Take My Coffee Black. Working closely with organizations\, he brings together individuals from varying political\, racial\, ethnic\, and religious backgrounds to participate in face-to-face discussions about hot-button topics to encourage healthy and safe – and sometimes even humorous – dialogue. By stepping out from behind the safety and anonymity of computer screens and social media\, Merritt shares ways for individuals to engage more productively\, no matter the issue at hand. \nTyler Merritt is an actor\, comedian\, viral sensation\, activist\, founder of The Tyler Merritt Project\, and author of the memoir\, I Take My Coffee Black: Reflections on Tupac\, Musical Theater\, Faith\, and Being Black in America. As a 6’2” dreadlocked black man living in the South\, Merritt is well aware of stereotypes and their potentially dangerous consequences. In response\, Merritt has devoted his creativity to bringing his ethos of “Love. Learn. Create.” to life through his words and videos as part of The Tyler Merritt Project. His viral videos\, “Before You Call the Cops” and “Walking While Black” have been viewed by millions and caught the attention of The New York Times\, Jimmy Kimmel\, and Sports Illustrated. Merritt takes his audiences along with him on a journey of contradictions: at turns both funny and sad\, mysterious\, and relatable\, commonplace\, and dangerous\, he shines a light on “full-spectrum humanity” (The New York Times) that makes an impactful and relevant message. Merritt’s emphasis on humility and connection provides an urgent roadmap during turbulent times\, challenging audiences to see our differences as a unifying force for humankind and to “get to know me before you call the cops\,” as he says in his video. In 2022\, Merritt debuted his first children’s book\, A Door Made for Me\, exploring racism from a child’s perspective and offering a message of unconditional love and acceptance to soothe the pain of blind prejudice. The book\, narrated by Merritt\, went on to win a 2023 Audie Award in the Young Listeners category. \nIn his talks and lectures\, Merritt infuses his core beliefs of unity\, empathy\, compassion\, and inclusion with humor\, making his message relatable and accessible to wide-ranging audiences worldwide.

SUMMARY:RESET: Get Unstuck\, Regain Hope\, and Redefine What’s Possible
DESCRIPTION:Melvin Adams knows first-hand how to achieve great things despite difficult circumstances. \nEven though he is only 5’8”\, he became a two-time NCAA All-American basketball player\, professional basketball competitor\, and a member of the World Famous Harlem Globetrotters. In this dynamic presentation\, Melvin delivers a timely message mixed with comedy\, powerful stories that connect\, and a practical message that sticks. \nLEARNING OUTCOMES:\nR: Remembering where we’ve come from\nE: Expect and get excited about change\nS: Start each day with the mindset to win and overcome\nE: Every day is a new day to make a change\nT: Time to take action on your goals \nMelvin Adams grew up in poverty and with an abusive father in Houston\, Texas. He was challenged early on with extremely negative circumstances. However\, he dreamed of playing professional basketball. One coach told Melvin that he’d never play professional basketball because of his height. Melvin chose not to let those words dictate his future. He chose not to let any disadvantages stop him. He chose success. He out-trained his competitors and inspired his college teammates to always aim for more as well. As an underdog who went on to become a professional basketball player\, Melvin asks audiences\, “Imagine what you can do?” Today\, he encourages and entertains audiences and demonstrates how they can achieve their dreams no matter the circumstances they face.
