SUMMARY:The Autistic "Bag of Traits"
DESCRIPTION:Hang with me while we bust up the stigmas of “high” and “low” functioning Autism. We will jump into the “Bag of Traits” to better understand the large array of Autistic traits and explore the answers to this question\, “What does each individual need to THRIVE?” My goal is for you to walk away with an affirming understanding of Autism and new insight into how to be the best support possible (even if it means getting out of the way:)) \nDana Butler\, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist\, Supervisor (Apagender)\, is the mother of three wonderful kiddos ages 7-13 all of whom are Autistic and ADHD\, and partner of almost 20 years is also Autistic and ADHD. Dana describes their home as one of silliness\, joy and difference. Dana is a therapist who specializes in working with children and their families AND with historically excluded populations. That work intersects with attachment\, trauma support and mindfulness. \nClosed Captioning will be available once the webinar begins.

SUMMARY:[IN PERSON] For Professionals: Silent Battle
DESCRIPTION:Please join other professionals as we learn more about the nervous system and how it reacts to stress. Each person we meet has an internal fight going on.  Those who have experienced trauma\, including the kids on your caseload\, are fighting every day to just be. Learn how you can aid in the healing journey. \nBreanna Gronli\, MSW\, LGSW works with Sojourn Counseling Group. As a trauma certified private practice clinician\, Breanna believes in the power of healing. Breanna’s unique perspective comes from her experience of being adopted at the age of 10 from the foster care system after a difficult childhood. Breanna draws from her own traumatic childhood experiences to help others heal. She has all ten aces but never let this stop her from healing. She is currently working towards certification in Registered Play Therapy with extensive training in Trust Based Relational Interventions\, a trauma modality created by Karen Purvis and colleagues. Breanna is also working toward a certification in Somatic Experiencing a modality working with the nervous system and the impact of trauma created by Dr. Peter Levine. Before attending graduate school\, Breanna worked for 7 years in the social work field in various capacities. She was a rule 25 assessor for chemically addicted individuals\, child protection specialist\, forensic investigator (Corner House trained)\, foster care/adoption licensor\, and Guardian ad litem for both children’s and family court. As a clinician\, she works alongside foster families\, adopted families\, and parents with children experiencing symptoms of trauma\, believing it only takes one caring adult in a child’s life to make a difference. \n

SUMMARY:Understanding the Impact of Birth Order
DESCRIPTION:Foster and adoptive parents often wonder about birth order in relation to fostering or adopting when they already have children by birth. This presentation will examine the significance of birth order\, and encourage participants to consider how it relates to birth/existing kids in foster and adoptive families. \nDaniela Coats is a Licensed Master Social Worker in the state of Texas (Currently under the supervision of Suisan Walker\, LCSW-S). Daniela is passionate about serving the entire foster family\, including birth children. Daniela is a self-identified “birth kid.” Her parents fostered when she was a child\, and eventually adopted her youngest sibling. Having grown up in a home that fostered and adopted\, Daniela was a temporary sibling to many children. Now\, Daniela and her husband have six children – four through adoption and two by birth. While Daniela has a variety of experience in social work contexts\, she has spent most of her career working in foster care and adoption. Daniela is currently a therapist at Be Still Counseling and Consulting in Texas. She has developed trainings and resources for parents and professionals\, and has contributed to professional writings on the subject. \nClosed Captioning will be available once the webinar begins.

SUMMARY:Autistic\, NOT "with Autism"
DESCRIPTION:Much is happening in the world of Autism as Autistic adults are leading the field and bringing hopeful changes. This workshop is for those just beginning to learn about Autism OR are just starting to challenge the harmful ways Western culture has stigmatized the Autistic brain/functioning. The purpose of this gathering is to bring about a cultural reframing of Autism from “disease” to “one of many neurotypes.” \nDana Butler\, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist\, Supervisor (Apagender)\, is the mother of three wonderful kiddos ages 7-13 all of whom are Autistic and ADHD\, and partner of almost 20 years is also Autistic and ADHD. SUMMARY:Lifelong Issues in Adoption: Reframing the discourse through lived experiences
DESCRIPTION:During the past two decades more than 27\,000 adoptees have joined Minnesota families from abroad or the public welfare system. Many\, if not most\, are now at an age where they are grappling with issues of identity and race\, questioning how and whether to search for birth family\, and wondering if their early experiences might affect their physical and mental health in the future. In addition\, there are many issues that are different for adopted persons (e.g.\, marriage\, having a child\, shifting identities\, and changing names\, caring for aging adoptive parents\, etc.). \nLifelong issues in adoption: reframing the discourse through lived experience is a one-day symposium\, organized by adoptees for adoptees where all speakers/artists will be adopted persons. Admission is $75 and includes a full day of lectures\, panel discussions\, music\, and audience participation.  Continental breakfast\, a morning coffee break\, and a box lunch will be provided.

SUMMARY:[For Professionals] Exploring Complicated Relationships in Foster and Adoptive Families
DESCRIPTION:Foster families claim and then relinquish children they love. Children who are adopted change the families who claim them in permanent ways. Blended families often have foster children\, adopted children and birth children. These children all have different experiences of what being part of a family means. Loyalty\, loss\, anger\, trauma and fear create an extremely difficult living situation for everyone in the family home. In addition\, parents and children navigate the concept of ongoing contact\, wondering who the ‘real’ parent is\, and building a new normal for everyone. Deena will also discuss the July 1\, 2024 law change in Minnesota pertaining to birth records and adoption. We will explore the complexities that adoptees\, birth/first families\, and family members of adoptees might face after accessing original birth records. Time for Q & A will be included. \nDeena McMahon\, MSW\, LICSW is a family and attachment therapist in private practice. Ms. McMahon is often consulted as an expert witness on contentious child welfare cases. She also serves as consultant to numerous state and county child protection agencies\, adoption agencies\, and parent support groups. Her clinical focus is on adoption dynamics and the trauma of disrupted attachment.  She does forensic parenting assessments\, attachment and sibling assessments\, and attachment therapy. \nMs. McMahon provides national and regional training and served as a faculty consultant to the Minnesota State Guardian Ad Litem Program for over 12 years. She works with the Prairie Island Indian Community in Minnesota offering consultation and trauma therapy and is often asked to provide short term crisis intervention for families who have experienced traumatic loss and violence. She previously served on the Board of Directors for ATTACH (Association for Training on Trauma and Attachment in Children). \nShe has been working with families and children for over 40 years and has developed expertise in the areas of childhood trauma\, childhood sexual abuse\, grief and loss\, family violence\, transracial placements and ICWA cases. \nClosed Captioning will be available once the webinar begins.
