SUMMARY:FALL FORUM: Inside Transracial Families
DESCRIPTION:Its often difficult to see the full picture in adoption. Adoptees and adoptive parents have individual and unique perspectives and struggles that don’t get seen side by side. Inside Transracial Adoption is a window into the journey of an adoptive family with all the highs and lows. \nAdoptive mother Julie Etter\, son Isaac Etter\, and daughter Sarah Etter will give adoption professionals and adoptive parents a window into their real-life struggles\, lessons\, and joys. They will share their individual perspectives and how they learned to see each others view points. They will open the space to questions from the audience and provide resources post-presentation.

SUMMARY:FALL FORUM: Behavior with a Purpose
DESCRIPTION:Behavior problems shown by children-in-care can act as a stubborn barrier to the creation of healing relationships to foster\, kinship and adoptive caregivers and helping professionals.  This workshop will focus on the “whys” of complex behavioral/emotional challenges.  When these challenges are seen only as “problematic”\, and not seen as having purpose for the child\, frustration and hopelessness can be experienced by youth\, parents and helping professionals alike. However\, when the purposes of behavior problems can be understood within the child’s life experience\, supportive relational interventions can be developed. In this workshop Dr. Rick Delaney and Charley Joyce will focus on understanding six purposes or functions that behavior problems serve.  Some of these arise from the child’s exposure to past trauma. Discussion will focus on sample behavior problems (e.g. lying\, hoarding\, defiance\, cruelty to animals\, etc.) and possible interactions to consider.

SUMMARY:FALL FORUM: Understanding ACEs: Building Self-Healing Communities
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will include a review of how adversity gets embedded in neurodevelopment and affects the way our genome may be used and affected.\nThe public health and communitywide implications of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study will be reviewed and specific examples of how this science has shown how ACEs affect the goals and practices in human service systems (education\, justice\, health care) in community will be provided.\nSelf-Healing Communities use this science—and the understanding and compassion that flows from it– as a platform to engage the creativity\, minds and hearts of all people in community—that can lead healing at the individual level and to a culture of change.  This change brings people who have been affected by ACEs and the systems that serve them together to bring hope\, new meaning\, and understanding that is necessary for moving beyond old ways of thinking about trauma\, ACEs\, and their related outcomes.  These changes unlock the latent potential and creativity in communities that lead to new ways to interrupt the intergenerational cycle of ACEs and reduce exposure to ACEs for the generations to come.
