SUMMARY:Supporting Your Biological Child
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a workshop with Daniela Coats. Many foster and adoptive parents have questions surrounding the impact that foster care and adoption will have on their biological children. This presentation will examine the experiences of biological children\, how to prepare them for the journey ahead\, and ways to support them along the way. \nDaniela Coats is a Licensed Master Social Worker in the state of Texas (Currently under the supervision of Suisan Walker\, LCSW-S). Daniela is passionate about serving the entire foster family\, including birth children. \nDaniela is a self-identified “birth kid.” Her parents fostered when she was a child\, and eventually adopted her youngest sibling. Having grown up in a home that fostered and adopted\, Daniela was a temporary sibling to many children. Now\, Daniela and her husband have six children – four through adoption and two by birth. \nWhile Daniela has a variety of experience in social work contexts\, she has spent most of her career working in foster care and adoption. Daniela is currently a therapist at Be Still Counseling and Consulting in Texas. She has developed trainings and resources for parents and professionals\, and has contributed to professional writings on the subject.

SUMMARY:Redefining Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Before it became a popular buzzword\, resilience was an adjective used to describe goldfish or tires\, something that didn’t need much taking care of. Even the dictionary says that resilience is about the “ability to return to the original shape.” Isn’t that a little ridiculous? How can we possibly be expected to return to our original shape when our lives fall apart? Don’t we want to allow ourselves to be altered by disruption\, setbacks or change? Isn’t adaptation—a true change—something to celebrate in a rapidly changing world and workplace? In this talk\, Nora McInerny uses stories from her own life and her podcast to introduce a new definition of resilience\, one that acknowledges the changes we didn’t choose. \nHow are you? Nora McInerny wants to know the truth. As the creator and host of the podcasts “Terrible\, Thanks For Asking” & “It’s Going To Be OK\,” and the TED speaker known for her viral talk\, “We Don’t Move On From Grief\, We Move Forward With It\,” Nora McInerny specializes in making space for emotional honesty and difficult conversations. From her bestselling memoirs and essay collections to her pieces in The New York Times\, TIME magazine and The Washington Post\, Nora’s work regularly touches on topics many would rather not discuss — death\, loss\, illness\, mental health\, trauma and change — with disarming wit and earnest candor.\nDrawing on her personal experiences with grief — Nora lost her husband\, second pregnancy and father within a few weeks of each other — and her years of interviewing people who have lived through their own terrible experiences\, Nora’s unforgettable talks inspire audiences to face and conquer any obstacle — with the strength that comes from knowing that we are not alone.\nThough Nora addresses challenging and uncomfortable topics\, she does so with a light touch. Her disarming humor and wit break down the barriers that often isolate people who are going through adversity and change. Whether Nora is presenting a keynote or participating in moderated Q&A sessions\, she creates interactive one-of-a-kind multimedia presentations tailored to her audience\, giving everyone new tools to help them connect more deeply with themselves and with each other.

SUMMARY:Countering Learned Helplessness in Youth
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we will delve into strategies for combating learned helplessness in young individuals. She facilitates a restorative practice program for individuals in correctional facilities aimed at transformation through accountability. Laura holds various degrees in psychology\, domestic violence\, criminology\, and violence prevention. She also developed and taught an Introduction to Domestic Violence course at UMD.

SUMMARY:[FosterEd] Making a Difference: Caring for the Infant with Prenatal Exposure to Drugs
DESCRIPTION:Over 300\,000 children in this country per year are delivered to women who have used alcohol\, tobacco\, marijuana\, or opiates and other illicit drugs during pregnancy.  This program will explore factors that impact the newborn from both a medical and a neurobehavioral perspective and provide strategies that parents and caregivers can use to address Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome and associated neurobehavioral difficulties. \nIra J. Chasnoff\, M.D.\, an award-winning author\, researcher and lecturer\, is president of NTI Upstream and a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. He is one of the nation’s leading researchers in the field of child development and the effects of environmental factors on the developmental trajectory of children and adolescents.  Dr. Chasnoff’s work encompasses community approaches to the integration of behavioral health services into primary health care\, the schools\, and the other multiple systems that serve children and families. Dr. Chasnoff has served several U.S. presidential administrations on committees and commissions dedicated to organizing and coordinating services for children and families across the nation and developing policies and procedures for addressing the needs of children at risk from prenatal and postnatal trauma.  He also has worked with a wide range of States across the nation and internationally in developing universal outreach and early intervention programs for children and families affected by trauma or substance abuse. \nDr. Chasnoff received his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio\, which in 1991 awarded him its first Distinguished Alumnus Award.  He is the author of numerous research articles regarding the long-term cognitive\, behavioral\, and learning outcomes of high-risk children\, and his article on racial and social class bias in the health care system has been cited as a landmark study by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.   Dr. Chasnoff has authored 15 books\, which have received numerous awards and one of which has been recognized by The Hague International Court. Dr. Chasnoff’s books explore the biological and environmental factors that impact the ultimate development of high-risk children and presents practical strategies for helping children reach their full potential at home and in the classroom. His newest book\, Guided Growth\, has received international acclaim for its in-depth discussion of educational and behavioral interventions for children and teens with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and early trauma.   Dr. Chasnoff has been a regular contributor to Psychology Today\, writing about high-risk children and their families.  The recipient of several awards for his work with women\, children\, and families\, Dr. Chasnoff for several years has been selected by a poll of physicians across the nation for listing in America’s Best Doctors\, cited for his ability to translate complex medical and psychosocial issues into relevant policy that guides the delivery of quality services.   Dr. Chasnoff has been active in establishing comprehensive family intervention programs for children in Australia\, Denmark\, Portugal\, Canada\, Vietnam\, the former Soviet Union\, and across the United States and has lectured on this topic around the world.

SUMMARY:Why Permanency is Important
DESCRIPTION:We often focus on the time it takes for children to reach permanency and strive to meet permanency timelines set by both the courts and the federal government. However\, it is also important to consider why timely permanency is important to children. This training will explore children’s developmental knowledge and understanding of time. Participants will learn about the impact of time away from caregivers and the importance of permanency for children and families\, as well as language to support and increase children’s understanding of their experiences and of time. \nObjectives: \n· Understand a child’s sense of time. \n· Understand how time away from primary caregivers can affect a child’s stability. \n· Learn skills to talk with youth about their experiences. \nPresented by: Anna Clavin\, MA\, LMFT\, IECMH-E®\, PMH-C \nEllison Center\, St. Cloud\, MN \nAnna Clavin is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist with years of experience working alongside families who are at risk and/or with families in the child welfare system. SUMMARY:Building a Pathway for Trauma-Informed Youth
DESCRIPTION:Through childhood and adolescence we encounter critical incidents in which the opportunity to become more aware of ourselves and emotionally connected to another is made available. Trauma steals that from us. In this training\, Cam interrogates the process through which trauma turns “everything was good” to “everything is cursed.” Helping youth become trauma-informed cultivates clarity for adoptees and their families about person-specific realities which our mainstream culture has yet to reach. In doing so\, we help turn an ever-long desperation for escape into a progressive inclination toward health\, wellness\, community\, and hope. Please join us for collaborative training and dialogue with Cam to consider both adoptee testimonies and clinical strategies that illustrate the significance of sharing the process of trauma-informed care with the next generation of adoptees. \nCam’s personal experience as an international adoptee from Korea informs and inspires his current professional work. He formed his own private practice\, Therapy Redeemed\, in 2018\, to raise awareness and respond to the mental health needs of adoptees and their families wherever they may be in their adoption journey. Cam’s vision for adoptee-centered advocacy is evident through his 1:1 counseling services\, live workshops and support groups\, Masterclass trainings\, and his active content creation/collaboration in and through various media platforms. His work has been featured in Christianity Today\, National Council for Adoption\, University of Minnesota School of Social Work\, and Center for Adoption Support and Education. He is currently working on a manuscript for a book to be released through InterVarsity Press to address the intersection of adoption\, mental health\, and social justice. Cam brings value and much needed perspective to the adoption community\, personally and professionally.
