SUMMARY:The Impact of Technology and Social Media on Children and Adolescents
DESCRIPTION:Summertime means more time for social media!  This presentation will provide an overview of the increasing rates of technology and social media among youth. It will discuss the impact of technology and social media usage that it has on children and teens socially\, emotionally and cognitively. The presentation will provide practical tips to help children and teens manage social media usage along with helpful resources. It will discuss the importance of moderation and supervision along with tips for parents. \n  \n\nDr. Heather Siek obtained her undergraduate degree in Psychology and Child Development from NDSU in Fargo\, ND. She went right on to graduate school where she obtained her doctorate in Clinical Psychology. She holds a license as a professional clinical counselor. She has spent the last 14 years working as an outpatient therapist at non-profit clinics specializing in anxiety disorders\, early childhood trauma and behavioral disorders. She is trained in many evidence based interventions. She currently works full-time as an Assistant Professor of Psychology at MSUM in Moorhead\, MN. She continues to see a few clients a week at a local non-profit\, The Village Family Service Center. Heather is also an adoptive mother to a 5 year old little girl.

Studies show if we’ve faced challenging life experiences it can change our set point for well being and make it harder for us to stay calm when the children we care for are struggling. Feeling dysregulated\, being stuck on high alert\, a lack of self-compassion\, all of these require us\, as caregivers\, to do the courageous work of attending to our own healing. Putting thoughts on paper in a curated\, science-based step by step way can help us to identify and adopt new ways of responding to stress and reset our brain’s pathways for neurobiological resilience. DESCRIPTION:This is a new training that Ampersand Families is offering to our families. It will focus on how to support and affirm a youth who identifies as lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, queer\, questioning\, or another identity in the LGBTQ+ community in an adoptive\, pre-adoptive\, or relative/kinship home. This training will also include strategies to implement in your home to create a welcoming and inclusive space regardless of the youth’s sexuality. SUMMARY:Keeping Their Spirit Strong: Understanding Trauma in Indigenous Children in Foster Care

It offers a grounding in how trauma\, especially when layered with the loss of culture\, community\, and identity\, affects indigenous children. We’ll talk about how historical trauma and intergenerational trauma continues to shape families today\, how these traumas show up in behavior\, development\, and relationships\, and how to respond in ways that promote connection\, healing\, and cultural identity. Using stories and reflection\, this conversation centers Indigenous world views\, and calls attention to the responsibility of systems and professionals to protect\, not only children’s safety\, but their spirit and sense of belonging. \nLearning Objectives:\n• Describe how historical and intergenerational trauma affect the well-being of Indigenous children in foster care.\n• Identify common trauma responses in Indigenous youth\, and how these may be misinterpreted or mishandled in systems.\n• Explore culturally grounded strategies to support resilience\, connection\, and healing for indigenous children in care. \nKimee Wind-Hummingbird\, MSW\, (Muscogee)\, Training and Technical Assistance Manager\, National Native Children’s Trauma Center\nKimee\, a citizen of the Muscogee Nation with Cherokee descendancy\, served the youth and families in the Child and Family programs of her two Nations for 22 years before joining the University of Montana’s National Native Children’s Trauma Center in 2021. \nIn addition to considerable experience in Tribal Program administration\, development and enhancement\, she also has extensive expertise on the Indian Child Welfare Act. Kimee has trained and consulted with both Tribal and non-Tribal partners including Judges\, Attorneys\, State Child Welfare Agencies\, Indian Child Welfare Programs\, Juvenile Justice Agencies\, Schools and Tribal Healthcare Facilities throughout the US and Canada. In May 2023\, she participated in an International Child Welfare Exchange in Israel discussing child welfare issues affecting communities across the globe. Her focus across all her professional activities has been keeping Indigenous families connected to their Nation\, Culture\, and Community. \nKimee has always lived on the Muscogee reservation in Oklahoma where she enjoys spending time with her three adult daughters\, two granddaughters and granddog.
