SUMMARY:Foster Care and Adoption Education Classes – In-Person
DESCRIPTION:The in-person track is best suited for individuals who need or desire to complete their education quickly\, prefer in-person learning and/or those who have previously completed education and want a refresher course. \nThis track will primarily take place during two live consecutive days (Friday/Saturday) with minimal use of the online learning management system which includes introductory sessions as well as a pre- and post- test. \nChildren’s Home is pleased to offer a travel stipend for Greater Minnesota families interested in attending an In-Person cohort. The $300 stipend is available for families who live at least 50 miles away from the class location. To receive the stipend\, families will fill out a stipend request form at the end of their in-person class. Eligibility will then be confirmed and payment (by check) sent to the family.

We all know the importance of getting a good night sleep for our health and wellbeing\, and this webinar\, with Allison Ezell of Dwell Pediatric Sleep\, will offer tools and strategies for helping families navigate sleep challenges. \nPresented by Allison Ezell \nAllison Ezell is a Certified Pediatric Sleep Consultant from Dallas\, Texas\, and the founder of Dwell Pediatric Sleep. She is also a wife and mom of four children – a biological son and daughter and two sons who joined her family through adoption. With a special passion for helping foster and adoptive families navigate sleep issues\, Allison brings a unique angle to her sleep consultations\, as she is able to bring a trauma-informed perspective to a field where it has long been desperately needed. Allison’s goal at Dwell Pediatric Sleep is to help families identify the root cause of their children’s sleep issues and offer practical\, science-based solutions and sleep plans that actually work. Allison has a Bachelor’s degree in Communication\, a Master’s degree in Education\, and she spent many years in the classroom prior to founding Dwell Pediatric Sleep in 2021.

DESCRIPTION:A foster parent must be many things to many people. Child welfare professionals depend on the skills of foster parents. Children need safety and guidance to heal from the various traumas that they have experienced in their short lives. In session 2 of this 3-part series\, we will explore the following skills: patience and humor\, stability and consistency in relationships\, discipline.  We will end with session 3 in December: self-care\, collaboration with multiple people in the child’s life\, and cultural and identity development. \nIf you missed session 1\, we learned about listening with empathy\, perseverance in the midst of the struggle\, flexibility and adaptability. She has worked with children\, youth\, and families for over 28 years\, helping them increase their capacity for healthy relationships. Her current passion is working with families involved in child protection and foster care. As a foster and adoptive parent she is intimately aware of the joy and heartache experienced within the foster system. \nAngie Ellsworth\, MS\, LSW\, LSC\, is the owner of Timeout Behavior Coaching\, LLC\, where she trains and coaches parents and teachers in research-based positive behavior strategies to create a more calm and respectful environment and build healthier relationships. SUMMARY:Positive Identity Development for Transracial/Transcultural Composed Families
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will provide an overview of racial and cultural identity development from birth through early grade school.  It will also address how adult caregivers/providers can intentionally support and encourage healthy and positive identity development for children who may differ in terms of perceived race or culture from their caregivers/parents/family. \nKimara Gustafson is an Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota\, Department of Pediatrics. Her professional areas of interest include special health care needs of adoptive children and children who have experience in the foster care system\, socio-emotional trauma impact on development\, racial and cultural social identity development for trans-racially adoptive or foster care children\, and racial discrimination among historically marginalized youth in the United States. Additional interests include mentorship\, coaching and providing support to parents and caregivers\, specifically those in families that intersect with adoption and foster care systems

DESCRIPTION:The group was created to provide foster and adoptive caregivers who are part of the LGBTQ+ community an opportunity to connect about their experiences as foster and adoptive parents. \nThis group is facilitated by CH/LSS staff. Participants may have worked with\, or currently be working with\, any agency/county for foster care or any type of adoption (foster care\, infant\, international). We ask that participants who are currently in the foster care/adoption process be home study approved. This service is provided by funding made possible by the Minnesota Department of Children\, Youth\, and Families. \nMeeting Details\nThis group will meet on the second Monday of the month from 6:00-7:30 p.m. (CT). Meetings will alternate monthly between online and in-person sessions. There is no cost to attend. Childcare will be offered for in-person groups. You may register to attend one\, multiple\, or all dates offered below. \nIn-person meetings will take place at our main office location: 1605 Eustis Street\, Saint Paul\, MN 55108. \nFor virtual meetings\, you will receive a Zoom link via email the day of the meeting.

DESCRIPTION:An Opportunity for Foster & Foster Adopted Youth to Make New Connections & Build Friendships \nLutheran Social Service (LSS) is excited to offer a special opportunity for foster and foster adopted youth (ages 13-17) to spend a weekend among peers who have shared life experiences at Camp Knutson (Camp K) in Crosslake\, Minnesota. In addition to helping foster and foster adopted youth build new connections and make new friends\, this retreat will offer an opportunity for siblings who are not currently residing in the same placement to spend quality time together and maintain their familial bond. Registration priority will be given to siblings who do not reside in the same household. Whether attending with a sibling or not\, every youth will gain valuable life skills that can be used long after the retreat has concluded.

DESCRIPTION:This training acknowledges the complexities associated with Relative/Kinship caregiving through fostering and adoption. Topics will include divided loyalties\, redefining roles and relationships\, setting boundaries with parents and other relatives\, the range of emotions caregivers can feel and how children who have experienced trauma\, separation\, or loss can impact a caregiver’s own well-being.
