DESCRIPTION:C&TC is a benefit for children in Minnesota who are eligible for Medical Assistance (Medicaid). C&TC provides for a regular schedule of well-child checks 0-20 years of age that help children and youth stay healthy. These well-child checks look at your child’s growth\, development and overall health. These “checkups” are meant to keep your child healthy by finding any health concerns or problems early. Finding health concerns early prevents them from becoming bigger problems later. SUMMARY:[Spring Summit] The "S" Word: Breaking the Silence Around Suicidality and Self-Injury
DESCRIPTION:Discussions around suicide and self-injury can be challenging and uncomfortable\, yet these conversations are critical in providing effective support and intervention. This workshop is designed to provide a safe space to address stigma\, build confidence and skills in risk assessment\, initiate meaningful dialogue and foster a safe environment for individuals struggling with suicidal experiences and/or self-harm. \nObjectives:\n– Recognize warning signs and risk factors.\n– Explore techniques to reduce stigma and foster effective and empathetic conversations.\n– Build confidence in understanding and responding to various levels of suicidal ideation.\n– Develop skills to navigate challenging emotional responses and provide support during crises involving suicidal ideation and self-injury. \n  \n\nBrianna received her MSW from the University of Minnesota in 2018 and currently holds her LICSW. Brianna works as a clinical program therapist with the MN Department of Corrections in a maximum-security mental health unit where she works with incarcerated individuals experiencing an acute mental health crisis. She is also a member of The Minnesota Suicide Prevention Taskforce where she works to elevate suicide prevention as a priority in MN. She has worked in the mental health field for almost 15 years and has grown passionate about working with children\, adolescents\, and adults who hold marginalized identities. Brianna enjoys presenting educational trainings to a variety of different agencies and organizations on topics including attachment and development\, severe and persistent mental illness\, LGBTQ+ topics and trauma-informed care.

SUMMARY:[Spring Summit] Racialized: The Cultural Impact on Native American Transracial Adoption
DESCRIPTION:Rarely discussed are the problematic issues that arise in the child who is adopted from one ethnicity/culture and placed into another\, especially if that placement revolves around race. My experience as an anthropologist and Native American transracial adoptee allows me to speak directly about the negative pressure we encounter as we attempt to navigate the two cultures we inhabit. We will explore the tensions through the lens of cultural anthropology\, including issues if belonging/non-belonging\, what we have gained/lost by living in a racialized world\, as well as how Americans are taught to ‘see’ Native Americans and how those negative images impact us. What the audience will learn is that the racialized environment the child lives in can have long-lasting negative impacts\, far into their adulthood\, and ways they can work in their communities to combat the racism\, while standing up for their child. \n  \n\nSusan Devan Harness is a cultural anthropologist\, member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes\, and an American Indian Transracial Adoptee. \nHer book Bitterroot: A Salish Memoir of Transracial Adoption has received multiple awards including the High Plains Book Award for Indigenous Author and Creative Nonfiction categories\, as well as the Sudler Award for the best work of nonfiction or fiction on western American subject by a woman author.  Ms. Harnesses cultural anthropology research\, Mixing Cultural Identities Through Transracial Adoption\, was published by Edwin Mellen Press. \nHer most recent writing appears in the anthology\, When We Become Ours\, published by HarperCollins\, and Philosophies of Adoption: Perspectives and Reflections\, which will be published by Lexington Press in 2024. \nMs. Harness has spoken both nationally and internationally on the topic of American Indian transracial adoption\, as well as appeared in various media including podcasts\, public radio\, and on the TEDxMileHigh stage.  She holds MAs in Anthropology and English\, both from Colorado State University\, where she is an affiliate of the Department of Anthropology and Geography. \nMs. Harness lives in Fort Collins\, Colorado with her husband\, Rick\, her Golden retriever\, Max\, and a beautiful vegetable garden.

DESCRIPTION:Adult Adoptees from all placing agencies are welcome to attend. While each story is unique\, we recognize that there are many core similarities that adoption weaves into life experiences. Topics will be suggested\, but each month the conversation will be open to relevant\, participant-led\, discussion. This is a safe\, confidential space\, the group is facilitated by adult adoptee CH/LSS staff. \nParticipants may have been adopted through any type of adoption (infant\, international\, foster care adoption) and through any agency/county. After registration\, you will receive information to join the next session. This service is provided by funding made possible by the Minnesota Department of Children\, Youth\, and Families. \nMeeting Details\nThis group meets on the second Thursday of the month from 6:00-7:30 p.m. (CT). Meetings alternate between online and in-person options. There is no cost to attend. SUMMARY:[Spring Summit] Caring for Others Without Losing Yourself
DESCRIPTION:Self-compassion involves treating ourselves kindly\, like we would a close friend we cared about. Rather than continually judging and evaluating ourselves\, self-compassion involves generating kindness toward ourselves as imperfect humans\, and learning to be present with the inevitable struggles of life with greater ease. This talk will present theory and research on self-compassion\, which a burgeoning empirical literature has shown to be powerfully associated with psychological wellbeing. It will also discuss the crucial role that self-compassion plays for caregivers in order to reduce burnout. Practices will be taught to help people bring compassion to moments of distress in daily life. A practice will also be taught that can help individuals maintain balance in difficult situations involving caring for others. \n  \n\nKristin Neff\, PhD received her doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley\, studying moral development.  She did two years of postdoctoral study at the University of Denver studying self-concept development. She is currently an Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. During Dr. Neff’s last year of graduate school\, she became interested in Buddhism and started practicing self-compassion. While doing her post-doctoral work she decided to conduct research on the construct\, which had not yet been examined empirically. She developed a theory and created a scale to measure self-compassion more than 20 years ago. Dr. Neff has written numerous academic articles and book chapters on the topic and has been recognized as one of the most influential scholars in the field of psychology. Well over 5000 studies have been conducted on self-compassion since her seminal articles were first published in 2003. In addition to her academic work\, she is author of the books Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself\, and Fierce Self-Compassion: How Women can Harness Kindness to Speak Up\, Claim Their Power and Thrive. In conjunction with her colleague Dr. Chris Germer\, she has developed an empirically supported training program called Mindful Self-Compassion\, which is taught by thousands of teachers worldwide. She is co-founder of the nonprofit Center for Mindful Self-Compassion\, which offers self-compassion training in a variety of forms.  Drs. Neff and Germer co-authored The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook\, Teaching the Mindful Self-Compassion Program: A Guide for Professionals\, and their latest book is Mindful Self-Compassion for Burnout: Tools to Help You Heal and Recharge When You’re Wrung Out by Stress. SUMMARY:[Spring Summit] [Part 1] Gender-Based Violence: Its Lasting Impact on Children
DESCRIPTION:Part 1 will explore intimate partner and gender-based violence and the lasting impact it may have on children who are witnesses or victims of this violence.  We will also examine how to talk with a teen in an empowering way.  Gender-based violence  is not a private or family matter\, it’s an issue that affects the community and we must work together to provide help and hope. \nJoin us for Part 2: Gender-Based Violence: A Caring\, Community Approach to Supporting Childhood Survivors on April 10th.  \n  \n\nMarcus Bruning retired from active law enforcement in 2013 after a 28 year public safety career.   Marcus served the last 20 years with the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office in Duluth\, Minnesota where he retired as Division Commander (Rank of Major).  Marcus also founded Marcus Bruning Training and Consulting in 2001. Marcus Bruning is known for the real world practical education and training he provides for community-based teams everywhere.  Marcus Bruning is a certified Federal Law Enforcement Training Center Training Specialist and provides instruction around the world in domestic crisis intervention and intelligence led policing. Marcus Bruning is internationally recognized as an expert on law enforcement response to intimate partner abuse\, sexual assault and stalking. Major Bruning also provides training services as a Contract Instructor for Praxis International\, Minnesota Program Development Inc.\, The Gender Violence Institute\, The National Sheriff’s Association and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.  Marcus has presented internationally for Global Rights For Women facilitating classes for members of parliament and non-government officials from 21 countries in Eastern Europe.  Marcus also assisted with the development and implementation of a risk assessment tool for The United Nations Women’s Organization in Tbilisi\, Republic of Georgia and facilitated Domestic Violence Institutes for Vital Voices Global Partners in Romania\, Honduras\, Poland\, and Argentina. Marcus facilitated gender-based violence response training for the U.S. Army in South Korea. Marcus specializes in providing insight into the surprising similarities of victims and police officers that will help you connect to the complex thought patterns of a victim in trying to survive the moment and the long term. Major Bruning has published articles in the National Sheriff’s Magazine and has been quoted in Oprah’s “O” Magazine.  Marcus was also an adjunct professor for the University of Minnesota from which he earned his Masters of Education degree and is a member of American Mensa.

SUMMARY:[Spring Summit] New Horizons in Father Engagement
DESCRIPTION:What to Do with Dad After You Have His Attention.  Now that paternal involvement in the lives of children has been flagged as important to both child and family well-being\, many questions arise about how the nurturing world is to make room for father’s contributions\, given that 1) those contributions differ from mother’s\, and 2) child-centered systems (including the family\, educational\, and healthcare) aren’t currently shaped to easily integrate his contributions. Co-parenting no longer uniquely references parenting after divorce\, serving instead as the marquis for the next phase of the real-world of paternal engagement—how parents tag team to raise their children across time\, or not. Research and public policy are woven together with clinical realities of the diverse world of paternal and grandparental engagement where non-traditional arrangements expand almost daily. Advice is tendered throughout\, ending with the signature audience-engaging Q&A of Kyle Pruett presentations. \n  \n\nKyle D. Pruett\, M.D.\, a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at both the Child study Center and the School of Nursing at the Yale School of Medicine\, conducted the country’s only long-term study of the impact on children of primary caretaking fathers. Author of several award-winning books\, he also writes a blog for Psychology Today called “Once Upon a Child.” He hosted his own Lifetime Television series\, Your Child Six to Twelve with Dr. Kyle Pruett\, and was chosen by Oprah Winfrey to host her award-winning video\, Begin With Love.\, and by Peter Jennings to appear with him on the Children’s Town Meetings after 9-11. \nDr. Pruett appears frequently in the New York Times\, on National Public Radio and Television. An acclaimed speaker and teacher\, he has addressed the National Press Club\, educated judges\, lawyers\, business leaders and physicians in many states and countries\, and advised dozens of legislators and policy makers at the state and national level. He is past president of Zero to Three: The National Center for Infants\, Toddlers and their Families\, and a past member of the Sesame Workshop Board of Directors. Dr. Pruett is featured in the award-winning Zero to Three Podcast series “Little Kids\, Big Questions\,” the Goddard Schools ‘Parenting in Five” and the Johnson and Johnson video. \nEducated in Indiana public schools\, and Yale and Tufts Universities\, he has served as a forensic consultant on child\, parental and family development\, paternal involvement\, children’s mental health\, creativity\, and the effects of media\, trauma\, and divorce on children. He was Visiting Professor at University of Calgary\, Alberta\, Canada. Dr. Pruett co-founder of the Early Childhood Peace Consortium at Yale and the United Nations with recent presentations in Istanbul\, Marrakech\, Florence\, and the UN/UNICEF in New York. He served as early childhood consultant to the Salama bint Hamdan Foundation\, Abu Dhabi\, UAE. A member of the Performing Arts Medicine Association\, Dr. Pruett is also a gifted musician and regularly performs as a soloist in opera\, oratorio and vocal chamber music. He is father to three daughters and one son\, grandfather of four\, and is married to Dr. Marsha Kline Pruett\, the Maconda Brown Professor of Psychology and Social Work at Smith College.
