SUMMARY:Brain Training for our Foster & Adoptive Kids to be Solution Seekers
DESCRIPTION:It is common for foster and adoptive children to wrestle with emotional dysregulation and a sense of disconnection due to the way in which we were brought into the world\, inconsistent caregiving\, and our loss. I am a nature-based occupational therapist and am passionate about empowering my young clients to build awareness of their senses\, bodies\, and thoughts to help them build self-trust and resilience. As an adoptee\, whole-body learning has also been a lifelong journey for me that I share with my clients and their families. Join us to learn strategies to help train your young person’s brain to become more confident solution seekers. \n  \n\nMya Zavaleta feels incredibly fortunate to be able to combine her love for nature with her 20 years of clinical experience as a bilingual (Spanish) occupational therapist to create her own Nature OT practice that boosts kids’ physical and mental health. That means she skill-builds with toddlers to teens while exploring in nature with them on the Central Coast of CA. She supports neurodivergent kids (with ADHD\, Autism\, Sensory difficulties\, anxiety\, PTSD) and kids that have experienced trauma\, fostership\, and adoption. Mya believes in helping every child discover their own superpowers and feel more confident and grounded to live with greater joy and ease. Partnering with families to offer strategies and creative problem-solving solutions for their children is also essential to the deep impact she has with her young clients and families. When she’s not working\, she loves to move – working out at bootcamp classes or getting outdoors walking with her sweet shih-tzu pup\, her teen sons\, husband\, and friends along any body of water and among trees.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Trauma-Informed Parenting: Helping Heal the Deepest Wounds
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for a Webinar: Trauma-Informed Parenting: Helping Heal the Deepest Wounds\nTuesday\, April 22\, 2025\, from 1:00-2:30 p.m. (CT)\n“All you need is love\,” says The Beatles’ tune.  For kids with significant adverse childhood experiences\, however\, love may have resulted in just as much pain as protection.  Separated from their parents\, the very same defenses that helped them survive then become a barrier to getting the love they need to thrive.  Caregivers are confused by the love/hate relationships traumatized youth have with them\, affectionate one minute and rejecting the next.  It is easy to feel helpless and defeated when youth do not seem to trust the connection enough to drop their defenses\, especially when situations escalate.  Before reaching the intersection of fatigue and frustration\, however\, we can take a different approach – TLC with TIP!  Let’s explore what it looks like to give the tender\, loving care kids in foster care need with a trauma-informed parenting approach\, and what it takes to hang in there when the loving gets tough! \nPresented by Susan K. Taylor: Piedmont Coordinator\, Consortium for Resource\, Adoptive\, and Foster Family Training (CRAFFT)\, Radford University. \nSusan Katherine Taylor has been at Radford University since 2011\, as a training coordinator with the Consortium for Resource\, Adoptive\, and Foster Family Training (CRAFFT).  She has worked with kids of all ages and families of all circumstances\, and has volunteered with Child Care Aware of Virginia for many years\, believing that all caregivers need to be informed about attachment\, trauma\, and meeting kids’ needs in a complex world. She has an interdisciplinary bachelor’s degree from Davidson College in Psychology and Sociology and graduated with honors from The University of Tennessee\, Knoxville\, where she obtained her Master of Science in Child & Family Studies.  She has post-graduate work from The School of Life\, where she majors in humor and humility\, with minors in love\, loss\, and letting go – accumulated over three decades of work with children and those who care for them\, and 25 years as a kinship caregiver.

SUMMARY:The Five Most Common Challenging Behaviors and What to do About Them
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: To receive a certificate of attendance for the live webinar\, attendees must register individually\, attend the entire training\, and watch from their own device to ensure proper tracking \nThis presentation explores the most challenging behaviors children who have experienced trauma may exhibit and provides practical\, trauma-informed strategies for responding with empathy and effectiveness. Child welfare professionals will gain insight into the underlying causes of behaviors such as shame\, need for control\, and sensory differences\, as well as techniques to foster trust and mitigate behavioral challenges. By understanding these behaviors through a more holistic lens\, professionals can better support children and their families in building healthy\, lasting connections. \n  \n\nDr. Jana Hunsley is a psychologist dedicated to supporting foster and adoptive families through consulting\, training\, coaching\, and counseling. Her work is centered on understanding and addressing the unique needs of every family member\, ensuring a holistic approach to healing and stability. Jana has created a proven model that improves the well-being and quality of life for foster and adoptive families. She earned her doctorate in experimental psychology from the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development at Texas Christian University\, where she focused on developing post-adoption support services. Jana has worked in a variety of clinical settings\, including residential treatment\, institutional care\, schools\, child welfare\, and juvenile detention\, providing therapy for children and youth who have experienced trauma. Her passion for this work is deeply personal—shaped by her own experience as a teenager when her family adopted her siblings.
