SUMMARY:Supporting Children Impacted by Parental Incarceration: Considerations for Caregivers and Professionals
DESCRIPTION:This session will explore children’s experiences when parents are involved in the criminal legal system and consider how caregivers and professionals can support children before\, during\, and after these experiences. We will explore how best to support children’s behaviors and emotions around parent-child contact (e.g.\, visits in a prison or jail)\, as well as when separations are more permanent (e.g.\, long-term prison sentences with no contact). We will consider these experiences through a developmental lens\, considering children’s needs at different ages. \nRebecca Shlafer\, PhD\, MPH\, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota. Professor Shlafer is a developmental child psychologist with additional training in maternal and child public health. Her research and teaching activities sit at the intersection of child development\, public health\, and the criminal legal system. She collaborates with many community-based organizations that provide support to incarcerated parents and their children. In addition\, she is leading a statewide initiative\, in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Health\, to implement model jail practices for strengthening families affected by incarceration in jails across the state.

SUMMARY:DCYF: Permanency Coffee Talk: Consent to Adopt and Northstar Adoption Assistance Process
DESCRIPTION:Learn more about the intricacies of a Consent to Adopt and what that means for the Northstar Adoption Assistance process. This training includes an explanation of what a Consent to Adopt is\, the relative search requirements\, and more in-depth on the Northstar Adoption Assistance Process including the Eligibility Determination application. \n  \n\nNicole Lanz\, MSW\, LGSW; Permanency Quality Assurance obtained a BSW from Winona State University in 2014 and a MSW from Winona State University in 2024\, where she was a Title IVE scholar. Nicole has 11 years of social work practice experience with a variety of populations and has spent the past six years practicing in child welfare including: child protection\, permanency\, ICPC\, and licensing. Nicole is a NASW Certified Supervisor\, and holds certificates including the Permanency and Adoption Competency Certificate\, as well as Policy Practice. Currently\, Nicole is one of three\, Permanency Quality Assurance team members through the Minnesota Department of Children\, Youth\, and Families. \nCatrina Ankarlo earned a Master of Public Administration from Minnesota State University in 2017 and her Doctorate in Human Services Leadership and Organizational Management from Capella University in 2022. Catrina currently works for the Minnesota Department of Children\, Youth\, and Families as the Permanency Policy Specialist.  Prior to coming to DCYF\, Catrina worked for a county agency in child welfare\, child protection and permanency case management.

DESCRIPTION:Caregivers and professionals consistently report that defiance and non-compliance are two of the most difficult challenges youth in care display. These challenges\, along with disobedience and disrespectful behavior\, are often exasperating for caregivers. Traumatized children often fail to understand and abide by rules at home\, school and in the community. The mind of the child with these issues may view rules\, demands\, and requests from authority figures as unfair and unpredictable and respond with resistance. We will explain the possible origins of these behaviors\, and intervention considerations. SUMMARY:SCOPE: Burnout and How to Avoid It
DESCRIPTION:SCOPE is a somatic experience acronym used to help support the nervous system during times of disruption. It stands for Slow Down\, Connect to Body\, Orient\, Pendulate\, and Engage. SCOPE also offers insight into how to notice and address these disruptions before they become stored in the body as trauma memories. This practice is especially useful in combating burnout\, which can be very high in social work and other similar fields. \n\nBreanna Gronli is a provisional LICSW and as a trauma-informed therapist\, she approaches healing with deep compassion\, creativity\, and a commitment to connection. Breanna’s work is grounded in the belief that healing happens through relationships—and often\, through play. She specializes in working with children and families using experiential play therapy and filial therapy\, and is currently pursuing her certification in play therapy to deepen this work. She has a particular passion and expertise in supporting children ages 0–5\, and works closely with teens\, adults\, families\, foster parents\, adoptive parents\, and children navigating foster care.

Barb coordinates and facilitates regional trainings\, coalition building\, implementing system changes\, supervision\, and quality assurance. She works with community leaders and agencies to establish and guide the operations of parenting support and education programs through the Circle of Parents statewide network. \nAs a Certified ACE Interface Master Trainer\, Barb specializes in the impact of trauma on the neurobiology and brain development of children\, epigenetics\, the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study\, and community resilience and capacity building (NEAR). She has extensive knowledge of child abuse\, neglect\, and domestic violence prevention efforts\, providing direct and indirect services\, support\, and intervention to women\, parents\, children\, and families in crisis. She is a survivor of child abuse and domestic violence and is committed to children’s health\, welfare\, and safety\, as well as developing parent and community-based leadership. SUMMARY:How Adults Can Interact with Children to Promote Emotional and Behavioral Regulation
DESCRIPTION:Children who have histories of complex trauma\, including experiences of prenatal substance exposure\, abuse\, neglect\, loss\, and witness to violence often endure significant emotional and developmental struggles\, sometimes even years after placement stability has been achieved.  This workshop will explore the neurobiological impact of complex trauma\, including the profound effects of early adverse experiences on brain development and behavior. Strategies to help adults promote emotional and behavioral regulation will be introduced\, with focus on how adults show up\, what adults can say\, and tools adults can use to promote organized and regulated behavior.  This overview will conclude with 15 minutes for Questions and Answers. \nDr. Chrisy Schmidt is a licensed clinical psychologist with extensive training and expertise surrounding the assessment and treatment of children who have histories of prenatal substance exposure and complex trauma.  Over the course of a long tenure at a nonprofit medical and behavioral health clinic\, Dr. Schmidt lead the child adolescent psychology program\, coordinated the student and postdoctoral training program\, directed several foundation and federal grants\, and provided numerous local and national trainings regarding pre- and postnatal trauma. [READ MORE] In addition to her direct clinical work\, Dr. Schmidt also enjoyed a long tenure as a consultant to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services\, where she provided consultative psychological services to administrators\, caseworkers\, and other professionals involved with the Department.  In her private consulting work\, Dr. Schmidt continues to train agencies and communities across the country regarding the treatment and assessment of youth who have histories of pre- and post-natal adversity.  Each summer\, Dr. Schmidt and her family appreciate the additional opportunity to help run a two-week overnight camp for children who have special needs\, Camp SOAR. \nIn all professional endeavors\, Dr. Schmidt is committed to helping individuals and systems understand and address the impact of the work on one’s personal and professional well-being.  After many years of working alongside colleagues who were suffering both personally and professionally by virtue of holding onto the pain of others\, Dr. Schmidt founded H3 Wellness: Holding Hope for Helping Professionals.  With an overarching mission to assist helper organizations take better care of their clients by taking care of their workforce\, it is the hope of H3 to promote vitality\, engagement\, and excellence in the work of caring for others.  Dr. Schmidt is honored to have worked with a variety of helping organizations in service of this mission\, including schools\, mentor organizations\, social service agencies\, child welfare systems\, and a child welfare legal organization.

She went right on to graduate school where she obtained her doctorate in Clinical Psychology. She holds a license as a professional clinical counselor. She has spent the last 14 years working as an outpatient therapist at non-profit clinics specializing in anxiety disorders\, early childhood trauma and behavioral disorders. She is trained in many evidence based interventions. She currently works full-time as an Assistant Professor of Psychology at MSUM in Moorhead\, MN. She continues to see a few clients a week at a local non-profit\, The Village Family Service Center. Heather is also an adoptive mother to a 5 year old little girl.

SUMMARY:"Personal Belongings" Project: Returning Records to Adoptees & Birth Families
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: To receive a certificate of attendance for the live webinar\, attendees must register individually\, attend the entire training\, and watch from their own device to ensure proper tracking \nThe Minnesota Department of Children\, Youth & Families (DCYF) is working to return approximately 9\,500 personal items to adoptees and birth families\, some dating back to 1885. This session explores the complexities of such efforts\, drawing from a similar 2019 initiative in Seattle\, where over 3\,000 adoption files were audited and items returned. Attendees will gain insight into structuring large-scale record restoration projects\, navigating ethical dilemmas\, and overcoming challenges to ensure adoptees have access to their personal histories. \n  \n\nAngela Tucker is a Black transracial adoptee and the author of “You Should Be Grateful:” Stories of Race\, Identity\, and Transracial Adoption\, published in April 2023 by Beacon Press. Her search for her biological family was featured in the documentary CLOSURE\, which premiered on Netflix in 2015. In 2022\, Angela founded the non-profit Adoptee Mentoring Society\, offering virtual mentorship for adoptees worldwide. With 15 years of experience in child welfare\, she has appeared on CNN\, Red Table Talk\, The New Yorker\, and more\, advocating for adoptees. Angela lives in Seattle\, WA.

SUMMARY:How to Be Welcoming to LGBTQ+ Youth\, with an Emphasis on the "T"
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: To receive a certificate of attendance for the live webinar\, attendees must register individually\, attend the entire training\, and watch from their own device to ensure proper tracking \nIn the last two decades\, many people have become far more willing to accept and act as allies for people who identify as LGBTQ+ (lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, queer/questioning and inclusive of identities that don’t always have an alphabet letter).  Underlying this is the idea that humans—however they may identify—universally have the right to live their lives honestly and with authenticity. Still\, of the letters in the “LGBTQ+ alphabet” it is the Ts” (transgender persons)  and those who identify as nonbinary (e.g. who don’t identify as male or female\, but rather simply as “human”) who more often face unique challenges relative to personal relationships\, public interactions\, and many other things that non-transgender  persons (the technical phrase is “cisgender”) take for granted.  What does it mean to be “trans” or nonbinary? In the workplace\, what can HR professionals do to make these identifying team members welcomed and accepted? What actions or words should they avoid? How does “passing” or not “passing” or the absence of legal rights in many states play into their daily life? And what about team members who aren’t accepting of these folks? Join national speaker\, diversity consultant and author Ellen “Ellie” Krug as she shares what it means to be trans or nonbinary and offers tips and advice on how to be inclusive toward anyone who so identifies. Come with questions! \n  \n\nIn 2009\, when she was a civil trial attorney in Cedar Rapids with 100+ trials\, Ellen (Ellie) Krug transitioned from male to female; she later became one of the few attorneys nationally to try jury cases in separate genders. The author of Getting to Ellen: A Memoir about Love\, Honesty and Gender Change (2013)\, Ellie has trained on diversity and inclusion to court systems\, law firms\, Fortune 100 corporations\, and colleges/universities on more than 1000 occasions. A hopeless idealist\, Ellie has presented her inclusivity training\, Gray Area Thinking®\, across the country. Ellie is the recipient of a number of awards and recognition\, including the 2023 Stonewall Award from the American Bar Association. She is also a columnist for Minnesota Women’s Press and a weekly radio host on AM950 radio with a show aimed at advocating for transgender and gender variant humans and anyone who is considered “Other.” Her monthly e-newsletter\, The Ripple\, reaches 9000+ readers and can be found at www.elliekrug.com. In November 2022\, Ellie was elected to the school board for her local school district.

Participants will learn to recognize the impacts of early adversity on child development\, and how they might support attachment-building with their foster and/or adoptive children. We’ll also discuss how to respond as effectively as possible to challenging behaviors. Through real-world examples and classroom-style discussion\, caregivers will discover how their home can be a powerful setting for transformation and growth. \n  \n\nAmie Summers\, LICSW\, SEP serves her community as a parent and professional consultant\, and trainer of mental health practitioners around the world.  She has over ten years of experience in supporting children\, teens\, and families\, and has had the distinct honor of witnessing her clients\, many of whom are from “hard places\,” re-discover their (they’re) awesome through the support of a variety of modalities\, including: Accelerated Resolution Therapy\, Somatic Experiencing\, Parts/Systems work\, Mindfulness\, and Sensory Motor Arousal Regulation Treatment (currently a trainer). She’s a certified Organic Intelligence Coach\, and serves in a Faculty role at Organic Intelligence®. Amie’s greatest teachers may be her three young children – experts in living joyfully in the here-and-now.
