SUMMARY:[Fall Forum] Race and Law Enforcement
DESCRIPTION:Ron Stallworth was the first Black detective in the history of the Colorado Springs Police Department. He overcame many obstacles\, including prejudice from members of his own force and the difficulty of impersonating a KKK member. Stallworth offers insights on the intersections of race and law enforcement: how they have changed in some ways and stayed the same in others. Stallworth draws on both his own experiences and historical and current events.

SUMMARY:Using Reflective Foster Parenting to Understand Non-compliance and Defiance
DESCRIPTION:Caregivers and professionals consistently report that defiance and non-compliance are two of the most difficult challenges youth in care display. These challenges\, along with disobedience and disrespectful behavior\, are often exasperating for caregivers. Traumatized children often fail to understand and abide by rules at home\, school and in the community. The mind of the child with these issues may view rules\, demands\, and requests from authority figures as unfair and unpredictable and respond with resistance. We will explain the possible origins of these behaviors\, and intervention considerations. Specific attention will be placed on the connection of defiance and non-compliance with anxiety\, trauma and neglect.

SUMMARY:SCOPE: Burnout and How to Avoid It
DESCRIPTION:SCOPE is a somatic experience acronym used to help support the nervous system during times of disruption. It stands for Slow Down\, Connect to Body\, Orient\, Pendulate\, and Engage. SCOPE also offers insight into how to notice and address these disruptions before they become stored in the body as trauma memories. This practice is especially useful in combating burnout\, which can be very high in social work and other similar fields. \n\nBreanna Gronli is a provisional LICSW and as a trauma-informed therapist\, she approaches healing with deep compassion\, creativity\, and a commitment to connection. Breanna’s work is grounded in the belief that healing happens through relationships—and often\, through play. She specializes in working with children and families using experiential play therapy and filial therapy\, and is currently pursuing her certification in play therapy to deepen this work. She has a particular passion and expertise in supporting children ages 0–5\, and works closely with teens\, adults\, families\, foster parents\, adoptive parents\, and children navigating foster care.

SUMMARY:Understanding NEAR: Building Self-Healing Communities
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will help attendees understand NEAR\, which stands for Neurobiology\, Epigenetics\, ACEs\, and Resilience. It will cover how our early experiences impact our brain and behavior\, research findings from the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study\, and the numerous opportunities we have as individuals and collectively to foster resilience and healing. This presentation provides a shared understanding of Adverse childhood Experience (ACEs) and catalyzes community actions that promote resilience. By employing this strategy\, we adopt a public health approach to shifting the the trajectory of health and well-being in our state. \nAddressing intergenerational and historical trauma requires a range of creative solutions and approaches. Although a two-hour presentation cannot provide all the answers\, the key goal of this presentation is to establish a common language and understanding of ACEs and the relative research as a starting point. After attending this presentation\, attendees are encouraged to think about how this information could be applied within their “sphere of influence” (family\, workplace\, school\, community\, etc.). \n\nLinsey McMurrin\, a citizen of the Leech Lake Nation of Ojibwe\, strives to serve our communities in a culturally affirming way to promote truth-seeking\, healing\, and change. Linsey’s work focuses on understanding how we are impacted by our experiences and the experiences of those who have come before us\, allowing us to build more authentic relationships and connections through healing-centered engagement. Linsey advocates for equity-centered and community-driven work\, believing that cultural humility\, social-emotional skill development\, and a commitment to lifelong learning\, unlearning\, and growth are central components in supporting thriving individuals\, families\, and communities. Linsey is the Executive Director of Peacemaker Resources. \n\n\nBarb Sorum has been working in the field of child abuse and neglect prevention since 1993. As Director of Prevention Initiatives with Minnesota FamilyWise Services\, she works extensively with family and community supportive services to strengthen awareness and prevention education efforts. Barb coordinates and facilitates regional trainings\, coalition building\, implementing system changes\, supervision\, and quality assurance. She works with community leaders and agencies to establish and guide the operations of parenting support and education programs through the Circle of Parents statewide network. \nAs a Certified ACE Interface Master Trainer\, Barb specializes in the impact of trauma on the neurobiology and brain development of children\, epigenetics\, the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study\, and community resilience and capacity building (NEAR). She has extensive knowledge of child abuse\, neglect\, and domestic violence prevention efforts\, providing direct and indirect services\, support\, and intervention to women\, parents\, children\, and families in crisis. She is a survivor of child abuse and domestic violence and is committed to children’s health\, welfare\, and safety\, as well as developing parent and community-based leadership. Barb represents FamilyWise Services in local\, statewide\, and national collaborative activities\, including service on the statewide and national Circle of Parents board of directors.

SUMMARY:Rewiring the Mind: Healing Trauma Through Transformative Practices
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: To receive a certificate of attendance for the live webinar\, attendees must register individually\, attend the entire training\, and watch from their own device to ensure proper tracking \nDonna Jackson Nakazawa will guide participants through a series of neuroscience-based guided writing experiences\, from her new book\, The Adverse Childhood Experiences Guided Journal. Studies show if we’ve faced challenging life experiences it can change our set point for well being and make it harder for us to stay calm when the children we care for are struggling. Feeling dysregulated\, being stuck on high alert\, a lack of self-compassion\, all of these require us\, as caregivers\, to do the courageous work of attending to our own healing. Putting thoughts on paper in a curated\, science-based step by step way can help us to identify and adopt new ways of responding to stress and reset our brain’s pathways for neurobiological resilience. We will use the power of journaling to release worry\, create new habits of self-talk\, move away from harsh self-criticism\, and access deep inner calm. **Please bring to the workshop: paper\, pencil\, Sharpie\, and Post-It Notes. \nDonna Jackson Nakazawa is an award-winning author\, internationally known speaker\, and author of nine books. Her upcoming book\, Mind Drama: The Science of Rumination and How to Outwit your Inner Defeatist\, is a scientific exploration of rumination; one the most corrosive mental habits we can engage in. Donna explores why we’re all doing it more\, how it can undermine our mental health\, and what science tells us about new ways to turn dark ruminative energy into something empowering and purposeful. Donna’s book\, Girls on the Brink: Helping Our Daughters Thrive in an Era of Increased Anxiety\, Depression\, and Social Media\, was named a best book of 2022 by The Washington Post. Her other books include The Angel and the Assassin: The Tiny Brain Cell That Changed the Course of Medicine\, named a best book of 2020 by Wired; the bestselling Childhood Disrupted\, a finalist for the Books for a Better Life Award\, and The Adverse Childhood Experiences Guided Journal\, in which Donna guides readers through a personalized healing journey. Donna is also the founder and creator of the narrative writing-to-heal program\, Your Healing Narrative. Her writing has appeared in Wired\, The Boston Globe\, Stat\, The Washington Post\, Psychology Today\, Psychotherapy Networker\, and the journal Health Affairs. She has appeared on The Today Show and NPR and is a regular speaker at events\, including the Child Mind Institute\, Harvard Science\, UCLA Health\, Open Mind\, Rutgers University\, The GPS Parent Series\, Johns Hopkins\, Children’s Hospitals\, and the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine\, where she is a frequent guest lecturer. SUMMARY:Keeping Their Spirit Strong: Understanding Trauma in Indigenous Children in Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: To receive a certificate of attendance for the live webinar\, attendees must register individually\, attend the entire training\, and watch from their own device to ensure proper tracking \nThis session is designed for foster parents caring for Indigenous children involved in state foster care systems. It offers a grounding in how trauma\, especially when layered with the loss of culture\, community\, and identity\, affects indigenous children. We’ll talk about how historical trauma and intergenerational trauma continues to shape families today\, how these traumas show up in behavior\, development\, and relationships\, and how to respond in ways that promote connection\, healing\, and cultural identity. Using stories and reflection\, this conversation centers Indigenous world views\, and calls attention to the responsibility of systems and professionals to protect\, not only children’s safety\, but their spirit and sense of belonging. \nLearning Objectives:\n• Describe how historical and intergenerational trauma affect the well-being of Indigenous children in foster care.\n• Identify common trauma responses in Indigenous youth\, and how these may be misinterpreted or mishandled in systems.\n• Explore culturally grounded strategies to support resilience\, connection\, and healing for indigenous children in care. \nKimee Wind-Hummingbird\, MSW\, (Muscogee)\, Training and Technical Assistance Manager\, National Native Children’s Trauma Center\nKimee\, a citizen of the Muscogee Nation with Cherokee descendancy\, served the youth and families in the Child and Family programs of her two Nations for 22 years before joining the University of Montana’s National Native Children’s Trauma Center in 2021. \nIn addition to considerable experience in Tribal Program administration\, development and enhancement\, she also has extensive expertise on the Indian Child Welfare Act. SUMMARY:How to Be Welcoming to LGBTQ+ Youth\, with an Emphasis on the "T"
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: To receive a certificate of attendance for the live webinar\, attendees must register individually\, attend the entire training\, and watch from their own device to ensure proper tracking \nIn the last two decades\, many people have become far more willing to accept and act as allies for people who identify as LGBTQ+ (lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, queer/questioning and inclusive of identities that don’t always have an alphabet letter).  Underlying this is the idea that humans—however they may identify—universally have the right to live their lives honestly and with authenticity. Still\, of the letters in the “LGBTQ+ alphabet” it is the Ts” (transgender persons)  and those who identify as nonbinary (e.g. who don’t identify as male or female\, but rather simply as “human”) who more often face unique challenges relative to personal relationships\, public interactions\, and many other things that non-transgender  persons (the technical phrase is “cisgender”) take for granted.  What does it mean to be “trans” or nonbinary? In the workplace\, what can HR professionals do to make these identifying team members welcomed and accepted? What actions or words should they avoid? How does “passing” or not “passing” or the absence of legal rights in many states play into their daily life? And what about team members who aren’t accepting of these folks? Join national speaker\, diversity consultant and author Ellen “Ellie” Krug as she shares what it means to be trans or nonbinary and offers tips and advice on how to be inclusive toward anyone who so identifies. Come with questions! \n  \n\nIn 2009\, when she was a civil trial attorney in Cedar Rapids with 100+ trials\, Ellen (Ellie) Krug transitioned from male to female; she later became one of the few attorneys nationally to try jury cases in separate genders. The author of Getting to Ellen: A Memoir about Love\, Honesty and Gender Change (2013)\, Ellie has trained on diversity and inclusion to court systems\, law firms\, Fortune 100 corporations\, and colleges/universities on more than 1000 occasions. A hopeless idealist\, Ellie has presented her inclusivity training\, Gray Area Thinking®\, across the country. Ellie is the recipient of a number of awards and recognition\, including the 2023 Stonewall Award from the American Bar Association. She is also a columnist for Minnesota Women’s Press and a weekly radio host on AM950 radio with a show aimed at advocating for transgender and gender variant humans and anyone who is considered “Other.” Her monthly e-newsletter\, The Ripple\, reaches 9000+ readers and can be found at www.elliekrug.com. In November 2022\, Ellie was elected to the school board for her local school district.

SUMMARY:Reflective Foster Parenting 101: Understanding the Mind of the Child with Challenging Behaviors
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: To receive a certificate of attendance for the live webinar\, attendees must register individually\, attend the entire training\, and watch from their own device to ensure proper tracking \n\nReflective Foster Parenting (RFP) provides an overarching approach to understanding and helping traumatized children. RFP underscores the importance of the mental states (thoughts\, feelings\, and intentions) of foster children and how they relate to the children’s behavior. A reflective foster parent helps the child to identify\, organize and use words to express their confused thoughts\, feelings and needs. The four aims of RFP are to improve: attachment relationships\, emotional control\, ability to deal with frustration\, and awareness of others’ perspectives. \n\nDr. Richard J. SUMMARY:Brain Training for our Foster & Adoptive Kids to be Solution Seekers
DESCRIPTION:It is common for foster and adoptive children to wrestle with emotional dysregulation and a sense of disconnection due to the way in which we were brought into the world\, inconsistent caregiving\, and our loss. I am a nature-based occupational therapist and am passionate about empowering my young clients to build awareness of their senses\, bodies\, and thoughts to help them build self-trust and resilience. As an adoptee\, whole-body learning has also been a lifelong journey for me that I share with my clients and their families. Join us to learn strategies to help train your young person’s brain to become more confident solution seekers. \n  \n\nMya Zavaleta feels incredibly fortunate to be able to combine her love for nature with her 20 years of clinical experience as a bilingual (Spanish) occupational therapist to create her own Nature OT practice that boosts kids’ physical and mental health. That means she skill-builds with toddlers to teens while exploring in nature with them on the Central Coast of CA. She supports neurodivergent kids (with ADHD\, Autism\, Sensory difficulties\, anxiety\, PTSD) and kids that have experienced trauma\, fostership\, and adoption. Mya believes in helping every child discover their own superpowers and feel more confident and grounded to live with greater joy and ease. Partnering with families to offer strategies and creative problem-solving solutions for their children is also essential to the deep impact she has with her young clients and families. When she’s not working\, she loves to move – working out at bootcamp classes or getting outdoors walking with her sweet shih-tzu pup\, her teen sons\, husband\, and friends along any body of water and among trees.
