SUMMARY:Webinar: Technology\, the Teenage Mind\, and Experiences of Loss
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for a Webinar: Technology\, the Teenage Mind\, and Experiences of Loss\nTuesday\, March 17th from 1-2:30 pm (CT) via Zoom\nYoung people today are growing up in a world where online and offline experiences are deeply intertwined. For some teens\, especially those who have experienced loss\, instability\, or major transitions\, digital spaces can be both a source of comfort and connection and a place where risks are harder to see. In this interactive online session\, Erin Walsh draws on adolescent brain science\, research on digital wellbeing\, and real-world examples to explore the core protective factors for young people in the digital age. Participants will leave with practical strategies for setting thoughtful digital boundaries\, opening ongoing conversations about online experiences\, and supporting safer\, more resilient digital habits grounded in trust and care. \nPresented by Erin Walsh \nErin Walsh is co-founder of Spark & Stitch Institute and author of It’s Their World: Teens\, Screens\, and the Science of Adolescence. She has worked with communities across the country who want to better understand child and adolescent development and cut through conflicting information about kids and technology. Her work has been featured in the Washington Post\, Edutopia\, Parents.com\, Psychology Today\, and Minnesota Public Radio. She co-authored the Tenth Anniversary Edition of the national bestseller Why Do They Act That Way? A Survival Guide to the Adolescent Brain for You and Your Teen and has worked with schools\, school districts\, parent groups and other youth serving organizations throughout the United States and Canada on issues related to digital media\, parenting\, and child and adolescent development.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Neuroception: Using Your Parenting Super-Power!
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for a Webinar: Neuroception: Using Your Parenting Super-Power!\nTuesday\, Feb. 03 from 12-1:00 pm (CT) via Zoom\nExploring more polyvagal theory\, we will dig further into how our brains and bodies react when we perceive threat and danger\, factoring in caregiver behaviors.  When stressed and stretched thin\, our unplanned reactions to challenges can broadcast “CODE RED” to kids\, creating a feedback loop that can quickly escalate to a tough night\, a bad week\, or a placement disruption.  Let’s talk about preventing it all by creating calm that we can bring kids into\, so that our homes have a little less chaos! \nPresented by Susan Katherine Taylor \nSusan Katherine Taylor has been at Radford University since 2011 as a training coordinator with the Consortium for Resource\, Adoptive\, and Foster Family Training (CRAFFT) at Radford University.  She has worked at state\, regional\, and local levels with children\, caregivers\, and the systems that support them.  She has an interdisciplinary bachelor’s degree from Davidson College in Psychology and Sociology and graduated with honors from The University of Tennessee\, Knoxville\, where she obtained her Master of Science in Child & Family Studies.  She has post-graduate work from The School of Life\, where she majors in humor and humility\, with minors in love\, loss\, and letting go – accumulated over three decades of work with children and those who care for them\, and 25 years as a kinship caregiver.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Neuroception: Understanding the Parenting Super-Power You Didn’t Know You Had!
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for a Webinar: Neuroception: Understanding the Parenting Super-Power You Didn’t Know You Had!\nTuesday\, Jan. 27 from 12-1:00 pm (CT) via Zoom\n“Neuroception\,” coined by Dr. Stephen Porges\, is the brain/body connection that scans for and processes cues to determine whether we are safe or in danger.  In children and youth who have experienced loss\, this sense is overly sensitized to sudden and abandonment.  Informed parents and caregivers who understand this automatic\, subconscious process are better at creating felt safety\, coregulating on the fly\, interpreting kids’ miscues\, and deescalating tense situations.  Let’s make sense of behaviors that don’t seem to have any!

SUMMARY:Sharing Your Values with the Youth in Your Care
DESCRIPTION:Sharing Your Values with the Youth in Your CareTues Dec 9 and Wed Dec 10 (two parts)12 noon- 1 pm\nResearch shows that if young people understand family values around healthy development\, decision making\, and relationships\, they are more likely to follow them; however\, many families do not discuss their values\, often because they have not had the chance to reflect on them. This workshop offers participants the opportunity to do just that\, as well as identifying the factors that have shaped their personal values and how those values have changed over time. The goal of this workshop is to help families feel more prepared to have values conversations with the young people in their lives. \nTrainer Bios:\nSonja Fernández was born and raised in Caguas\, Puerto Rico. Their main passions are social justice\, human rights\, restorative/transformative practices and writing/storytelling. In addition to working for liberation at all their intersections\, they love music\, coffee\, and spending time with their family and their dog Benito. Since 2017\, they have worked as a legal researcher and writer\, a site facilitator for the Hennepin County\, a as an educator and a Restorative Facilitator and Trainer. \nLy Baumgardt started with the SELF team at the start of 2025 and has been an educator since 2015. Before LSS\, Ly co-founded the local nonprofit TIGERRS and works as their coordinator alongside his role at LSS. It has worked with interACT and THIS around policy\, education\, medical trainings\, and peer healthcare\, and has been a youth worker and youth educator for the past seven years.
