Caregiver Strategies to Support Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)

Description: This presentation provides caregivers with a basic background of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and a variety of tips and strategies to support children with FASD. Strategies included covering topics such as: communication, emotional dysregulation, sensory environments, and more. To move towards a judgement-free society where individuals feel safe to seek the support they deserve, bias and stigma surrounding prenatal alcohol exposure and FASD will be addressed.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Address stigma surrounding prenatal alcohol exposure.​
  • Recognize fundamental characteristics of FASD.​
  • Discuss the impact of prenatal alcohol exposure on the developing brain.​
  • Discuss strategies, tools, and tips that can help support children with FASD.​

Presenter:
Teresa Kothbauer (she/her) 

Teresa Kothbauer is a member of the Proof Alliance Speaker’s Bureau. She has been involved with Proof Alliance since her son was diagnosed with an FASD at the Proof Alliance Diagnostic Clinic in 2014. Since then, she has developed an extensive understanding of FASD through attending conferences and FASD training and parenting a child with FASD.
